An ISBN can used once. That means for one book. But if you start a project and this project never becomes a book, the ISBN is not used and can be used for another book. That are the ISBN rules. Lulu cannot block your numbers. - try to erase the not used numbers in the abandoned projects. Can you use the ISBN again? - ask support to deblock the not used ISBN. As they are yours, they cannot do that. (They are neither the ISBN agency, nor the ISBN police.)
Hi, the projects I assigned those three ISBNs to are no longer in my account, they were permanently deleted projects that were never published or went into Global Distribution. They were, rather, experiments I tinkered with last year when I was trying out the new book design program after the website upgrade. I have created a support ticket with Lulu explaining the problem and listing the three ISBNs that I wish to be unblocked and released back to me for future use. One test to see exactly how registered the ISBNs are is do a web search on each number. If the numbers are actually registered with a particular title it should show up with the title listed. If the numbers aren't officially registered [as in only registered in the Lulu Press system] then it should be a simple matter for a competent member of system support with table access to back the number out of Lulu's system.

Yes, I had considered that. But I've already lost several ISBNS I bought through the UK ISBN Agency since the website upgrade.I was surprised to read that you had lost several ISBN numbers. This is disgraceful! The cost for one ISBN number in the UK (without barcode images) is £89.00.Please let us know what Lulu says when they reply to you richard Don't forget that you initially will get the robotic response, but reply to that and Lulu will eventually get back to you.

Thanks, Larika. I have replied to the automated email response I received from Lulu. I did a web search for the three ISBNs in question, and drew a blank. Yes, it's bad that Lulu have blocked me access to my own ISBNs which I paid for. It goes without saying this problem would never have occurred had it not been for the disastrous website upgrade last year. But then this is one of many problems I've had with Lulu since then.

But a block of 10 is only £164 and 100 for £369, so just a few pounds each. Great value considering the full service provided.

Hi, the projects I assigned those three ISBNs to are no longer in my account, they were permanently deleted projects that were never published or went into Global Distribution. richard There is of course no reason why you shouldn’t use those three numbers with another publisher such as Ingram Spark or D2D, probably easier than messing with Lulu, assuming of course you didn’t register the titles with Nielsen.

Thanks, Elken, good point about using them elsewhere, though I'll stick with Lulu for now. The three ISBNs are part of a block of ten I purchased. They are definitely not registered on Nielsen, I assigned them to Lulu book projects that never got past Draft status. And as I said, all three of those book projects are deleted from my account. I'm waiting to hear back from Lulu support, the problem being that Lulu is not allowing me to assign any of those three ISBNs to a new book project.

The three ISBNs are part of a block of ten I purchased. That's good you bought a set of 10 ISBN numbers richard, that makes the loss of 3 ISBN numbers cost JUST under £50 as against £267. Still I wouldn't want to lose £49.2. Also I agree with your statement that "this problem would never have occurred had it not been for the disastrous website upgrade last year." However in spite of that I too am sticking with Lulu and hoping that all the problems that they have had will get ironed out. I've just put my third book on Lulu and as usual I'm having problems with the cover. These last 2 are for my family and I'm just having them printed. Apart from the cover things have gone very smoothly.

Hi Larika, sorry to hear you are having problems with your book cover. Are you using the basic online cover design tool (which I use), or creating and uploading a one-piece cover? Yes, glad too the three ISBNs are part of a block of ten, but as you say, it's still a bad loss. A part of the problem is support tickets are not responded to quickly, apart from the auto response, and the Live Chat option seems to have been replaced by a malfunctioning robot

"Lulu's basic cover design tool, where the ISBN barcode is automatically printed on the back cover of the book." That was before the 2020 change. Is now the ISBN printed again on the back cover of Lulu books?

Yes. Only with the Cover Designer. Otherwise the user must add the barcode to their artwork.

I make my own covers. Luckily for the last book ElKen changed my jpg cover into a PDF (Thanks again Ken ) (I tried changing the jpg on line but Lulu wouldn't accept the online version I downloaded) This time my son offered to change my jpg cover to a PDF and I await his version. I hope Lulu will accept it. ElKen mentioned in another post that one could change the black bar at the bottom of the Lulu front cover design, but I have been unable to get the colours I want. I found I could change the back but not the black bar.
