Today I published the new edition of Filipiniana Bibliography. I couldn't get a free Lulu ISBN without accepting Global Distribution. So I accepted ... provisionally. I wish Lulu didn't connect its ISBN with Global Distribution.

I know you have tried to avoid Lulu’s Global Dist and just constrain your sales to direct with/from Lulu.
A suggestion - ramp up the Global price to a silly figure, say €50 or €60 and just concentrate on the Lulu price. That way you won’t have to worry about what goes on in Dist as no one will buy there, nor will you need to worry how long it takes for approval and acceptance.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the system calculates both the Lulu price and the Distribution price starting from the royalties I want.

You used to be able to create your own discount within Lulu, but since the 'upgrade' it's no longer doable. The only way is to comply with what they say or kick global to the curb.

- non global Lulu-Shop only as "discount" - more expensive with Amazon or IngramSpark or D2D, ....
Probably, you earn more with the discounted book (per book).

There is a publisher in South Africa that sells new books [I'm assuming Epubs] for US $1 per copy. Dollarbooks PTY LTD.
The idea is selling more by charging less, i.e.: 10,000 copies at $1 instead of ~100 copies at $6.

This is a good idea for popular books - pulp fiction in general - but it wouldn't do for scholarly publications because the potential readership is far smaller.

This is a good idea for popular books - pulp fiction in general - but it wouldn't do for scholarly publications because the potential readership is far smaller. The sales model kind of depends on the subject matter regardless of whether it's fiction or nonfiction. As you've noted the potential readership for some scholarly publications in some cases is far smaller, though at times the focus of scholarly work can attract a larger audience.
Fortunately I never expected to make a lot of money with my writing and so far I haven't been wrong.
