As Mag2024 lives on a greek island, I rememberd a book I read years ago, when I was in grade 3 probably. I liked it very much, it's from the English-German author Katherine Allfrey:
Riding the waves - a child's dream comes true! Andrula lives with her mother in poor circumstances, in the 1950s, when tourism in Greece was not yet so strong on the Greek island of Kalonysos. Her father died years ago while fishing. While herding goats, she meets a talking dolphin in a secluded bay. The two become friends and the dolphin takes her to a distant island where numerous beings from ancient Greek mythology live. The island becomes paradise for Andrula. Every day she plays, dances and swims there with her new friends - and slowly the magic and happiness of the dolphins take over her whole life and not only hers ... A poetic, warm-hearted story about an extraordinary friendship - a child's dream full of summer magic!
Apparently it wasn't just me who was excited by the book. Allfrey won 1964 the German Youth Book Prize with it and it has been translated into English, American, Dutch, Afrikaans, Portuguese and Hebrew.
