So, though I originally felt pain when there was a return at Ingram Spark I have now gotten used to it. Over three or so years I have had about six returns, maybe seven. It balances out, the gains, the losses and I haven't yet had to pay a cent.
After all, a good time investment.

A return is when someone buys your book but then sends it back for a refund.

That's one thing about brick-and-mortar bookstores. The bookstore sees your book in the catalogue and orders it on spec, puts it in the window or on the rack. If it doesn't sell it, it can return it to the intermediary bookstore. The latter then delivers the book to another bookstore.
With print on demand, there is no such thing as an intermediary bookseller. When you publish your book on IngramSpark, you can choose to offer that as well. If not, no bookstore will order it. If you do, you risk returns at your own expense (printing cost, delivery and return). Details can be found here: www.ingramspark.com/blog/making-your-book-returnable
