Ok, I came up with these little ideas for my new story. What do you all think of these?

The one on the left. Exactly the same font thickness, no italics.

Debbie, They seem to be a little bland. As my friend Maggie says please don’t use italic fonts. By the way - What is your target audience? You may find this from Lulu helpful www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6_YpCvt24EA useful extract from that video

What the previous speaker wrote also crossed my mind (no italic letters, bland).
What I have learned here: Contrast is important. Blue writing on a blue background is hard to read. If I remember correctly, it was once recommended here to convert the title page to greyscale. Then you can immediately see where the contrasts are good and where different colours have the same grey values and flow into each other.
I like the basic design and the picture with the lighthouse. Try it out, change the font, increase the contrast. How do you like it then? Put the two versions next to each other. I'm sure there will be a big difference!

Go to this site and study the colors. It shows how different colors work best with others making them stand out more. Colors will also create an emotional response. What emotion are you trying to get your customer to feel? www.coverdesignstudio.com/best-colors-book-covers/

Dark blue one just doesn’t work. Wrong colour text and too small.
The other has a nice image but it could occupy far more of the cover and the text is far too small and in the wrong place.

The very first one on the left was powerful. Just not a hint of italics anywhere-in my opinion.

I'm late to the party!
It would be neat to add a gull or two in the act of landing. It would help fill up empty space too.
Sorry. Back to my cage...

Hello Deborah
I don't know your book manuscript. I don't know who the target audience is. It helps me to play with the graphics programme and export every step in between. Then I put them side by side and compare. What appeals to me more? What do I like better in which variant? Is this the starting point for a new variant?
I opened your variant 5 with Gimp and tried out two or three things. Just like that, in a hurry: Left: The title is left-aligned (question: centered, left-/right-alined?) Middle: The whole 50% larger (question: size?) Right: added a gull in the approach (Blueandgold's question: empty space?)
It was suggested on several occasions that italics should not be used. In other words, a font that is vertical, not slanted. (Compare the effect with the italics above. Do you share the opinion of others that vertical fonts work better or do you prefer italics?) I tried this out briefly and then simply with two other fonts:
If you are a visual person, it might also help you to try out such small variations.
(And once again, in all clarity: these six variations, made out of the ground in 5 min, certainly do not meet any quality requirements. They only serve to evaluate and visualise the influence of, for example, the size or a different font.)

how did you put the xtra seagull in there? I work with Gimp. That is - let's say - the open source version of Photoshop. You may find it at www.gimp.org
To ad something you can just ad a new layer. Or two or five new layers. On each layer you put an object, move it, fade it out, change the size of it. If you are lucky, you export it, if not, you delete the layer.... docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-image-combining.html
Since I didn't have to pay attention to the copyright for the quick and dirty example, I just took the first landing gull from the image search of my search engine with a light background. Added a transparent channel. I used the magic tool to activate the background, erased it, and erased around the feet with the rubber. For a real cover it is not more difficult, but more time consuming, because it then requires a lot of fingertip feeling and more precise work. Good luck!
