Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny. True up to a point, however those individuals who live through the most hardships often are simply fortunate to just get by in life.
Being prepared for something extraordinary doesn't necessarily mean it will come to pass.
Dealing with hardships should [but often enough at times doesn't] make one appreciate when things do go well.

All true, unfortunately.

Maggie,
Thoreau: “The mass of men live lives of quiet desperation”, which is true enough even today.
It would be better stated in this day and age: 'Most people live lives of quiet desperation' yet the sense is the same. It's fine for people to dream of something better, but it takes will, determination, and patience to actualize a better state of being, if and when possible.
While not the best grammar, sláinte agus saibhreas as life life can be difficult enough on the best of days.

I've discovered a little ingredient that makes the worst days better. It costs nothing, you need no company, and it heals the body and takes away the blues. The sea. It's the craziest thing.

I’m fortunate enough to have lived close to the sea for most of my life. I spend most of my days now looking at the blue Mediterranean Sea out of my window, Lucky you. I had a little sailboat in the sea on my screen for years. Twice so far this summer I looked up and saw that very same image before my eyes. Shocking that that image became real. I never imagined it. It was more farfetched silliness than anything.

I look at the small redwoods and cypresses I've got in pots, acclimating to local conditions. It's soothing to my mind's eye them [as survive] in the ground getting tall. The trick is protecting them while from the peccary, wild hogs, deer, and other critters living here. In the autumn I'll get a few more and larger starter pots. The kinder have never seen tall trees, though one day they will.
Most people have a 'happy place' they can access in their mind, those who can see that place in the real world are the fortunate ones.
