I have two questions concerning formatting of the cover. Firstly, how far can I expand text/images into the safety margin? Secondly, as you can see in the attachment, the barcode is large. Can I reduce the size of it in Phoshop? The barcode is Lulu’s PDF and the book size is Pocket-book. Attachments:

Generate a new, smaller on online and add that. Or, you can layer via cut and resize. Regarding content in safety margin, you cannot place text there. It will be rejected. Images can overlap if not significant.

Thanks for the reply I've only a basic understanding of Photoshop. I'm aware of the 'dangers' of resizing, anti-aliasing... etc. What do I resize - the PDF image or the duplicated layer? So as for the image on the front of my cover which spills in to the safety margin - that's alright, is it?

Doesn't Lulu provide barcodes in differing formats now? It seems like I ran into that earlier this year and it was simpler to deal with than PDF's.
Anyway, another way to deal with the barcode PDF is to make it full size on your screen, take a capture of it then paste it into Paint or some such. You can then Resize and Save As pretty much whatever format you like. I've done that and saved it as a PNG then pasted it into my Word cover document, resizing at will. It worked fine.

Doesn't Lulu provide barcodes in differing formats now? They also provide PNG, but that's tiny - 106x50p. If it's perfectly fine to stick a tiny barcode on the book, I'll do it. PS to mods: how many times are my posts going to be idiotically 'quarantined'?

I think it's 4 posts? We have random rashes of spam attacks so it was implemented so keep the place clean.
The .SVG file (106x50 pixels) that Lulu provides is a Scalable Vector Graphics file. You can use GIMP (freeware) to scale it to a nice clear, crispy image of just about any size, then save it as whatever format you like. Be aware that the background is transparent.

It may seem idiotic to you, but it's not.

Cheers for the info. Typically, I can't open it with Photoshop because it's "not the right kind of document". I'm not messing about with Gimp or online editors that make the thing completely transparent. Does it look large enough? Attachments:

Principles. I do my Lulu covers with Photoshop. I open the Lulu template as a JPEG file. Whenever I make a change, I add a figures (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) to the file name. At each step, Photoshop asks if you also want to save the file as a PDF. Accept. Thus you have both a JPEG file and PDF file of the cover.
You need to prepare the following files: F) Create the front cover picture with the title on it as a JPEG file. B) Write the blurb in Wordperfect, where you can decide of the colour of the background, and that of the text. This file is saved as a JPEG picture. N) Prepare a JPEG picture of the ISBN number and barcode.
Then the operations are as follows.
1) Deal with the background colour of the front cover, the back cover and the spine. 2) Paste F on the front cover. 3) Paste B on the back cover. 4) Turn the cover by 90° clockwise to write the title on the spine. 5) Turn the cover back horizontally by turning it by 90° anticlockwise. 6) Paste N in its dedicated position 7) Check the result for the final touches. 8) Upload the final PDF file to Lulu when you have reached the "cover" stage.

For global Distribution your ISBN barcode must be 1.75" wide by 1" tall.
When you save your SVG as a JPG/PNG/BMP then paste it into Paint, it will save the background as white (and warn you before it does it, if memory serves.

The following site is incredibly easy, others who have similar problems might find it useful. resize barcode

I didn’t know that. At the cover stage? It is easily apparent?
