Hi all,
This is my first post and am about to publish my first book on Lulu.
While going through the process of publishing my book, I came across the section that deals with explicit content. I wasn't sure what that entailed so I clicked on the 'Learn More' link and a brief paragraph came up. Part of this text says the following:
"If your book has sexual content or other factors that would make it unsuitable for those under 18, please mark the content as explicit."
I am not sure what "other factor" could be. I can say that my work does not have sexual content. The work is a compilation of short stories, two of which are horror and describe graphic horrific deaths. This could be considered inappropriate for certain age groups, specifically those below the teenage years. I also have some foul language, but I like to keep it to a minimum, so maybe three to five uses of it throughout the book. I have no racial slurs.
Could the graphic violence and language classify my work as having "explicit content"?
I don't want to violate any policy, but I also don't want a possible audience to think that my book has sexual content or that it falls within the erotica genre by having the generic classification of "explicit content". What do you all think? Thanks! Saga

And you must check the "contains explicit content," which you already know.

As Maggie noted, explicit content can be sex, violence, or language.
Explicit Content warnings essentially mean some part of the content leaves nothing to the imagination.
Explicit Content may not be appropriate for a preteen, a teenager, or your great-aunt who's lived a sheltered life.
When in doubt, give the advisory.

If you have any doubts...if you think your work "could be considered inappropriate for certain age groups, specifically those below the teenage years"...then you should indicate that this is so.

If you report they copulated, it is not explicit, but if your describe the copulation in details, then it is explicit.

This excerpt from Castle's Keeper: A Song of Love and Justice is NOT explicit:The west'ring sun was fading now into a golden haze. The landscape's dark'ning shadows growing longer as the day Was drawing to a close across the fields of emerald green. In the deep blue heavens not a hint of cloud was seen.
Her head was resting on his arm, his other 'round her waist. A softest sigh escaped her mouth, her neck his lips did taste. Reclining in the softest rest, relaxed in tender peace,
The pair of them, their bodies twinned together in release.
Standing tall against the ravages of crushing time Castle White reflected the last hint of this divine Day in lives of two who sweetly rested in their arms Defying all the dangers that might threaten them with harm.
Melded as if one together, bodies, minds and souls
The lovers of the castle knew their fate cast from one mold...
Also, NOT explicit:
Her dark eyes gazed up warmly from her shadowed golden frame, Soft lips speaking restful thoughts that fed the burning flame Of passion wrapped in joy for she who held his deepest heart Within her beating breast in love forever (as a start).
Talking in their quiet tones with giggles now and then They held each other tenderly and drew each other in The deepest bond of friendship and of caring, serving love Ever granted earthly souls by Heaven's throne above.
The lady and her knight for moments held suspended long, Falling deep into their moonlit sighs in silent songs, The two of them as halves of just a single entity Sharing wordless passages in passion's poetry...
"Oh Red, take me to bed right now or lose me once for all!" Then both of them laughed loudly as they answered lust's deep call.
With dinner long forgotten and the moment filled with steam The two of them took part in playing out their passion dreams There beneath the penthouse glass entwined in tender clasps They reveled in each other's glee with lusty moans and gasps...

Nothing explicit in my books - but then they are technical tomes. .

If you report they copulated, it is not explicit, but if your describe the copulation in details, then it is explicit. If you use euphemisms or creative language, like Blue does, then it's not exolicit.

Maggie! Your typo created a cool new word!
Exolicit = conjunction of exhibitionist and explicit! I like!
OK, back under my rock...
