Well, I finally seem to have resolved this by trial and error. The answer was not to convert the text into MS Word. The problem was that there was one single word in the entire book in the Greek alphabet. I deleted it, and then made sure that every word of the book was in Times New Roman. That involved changing "default" scripts" that were imposed by "styles" which I hate. After that, I repeated the process of sizing to A5 several times, making sure I had not omitted any small bits which you can accidentally do with blocking or selecting. Then re-converted to PDF for the tenth time at least and tried uploading to the website. Then it finally worked - Lulu accepted it. I was very surprised.

Ah, good! I despised Styles too (and still do to a certain extent) when I migrated to MSWord. I was a WordPerfect 6 devotee but upon changing jobs decades ago was forced to make the switch. I still stuggle with it but after doing a few books now I've attained an edgy sort of comfort level with the Styles. MSWord seems to be WAY over-thought. But will I change again to something else? Probably not.
