A couple of years ago, I tested one of them for French. It was awful!

The only ones I have heard are not good, even if read by a 'celebrity'. I assume they cost more to hire and the name looks impressive as the reader, but it does not mean they are good.

Sometimes, to check what I have written, I turn it into a PDF, and have it read by Windows. There is a choice of about 6 voices in French, male and female. The number of voices in English is larger. Whichever the language, my favourite reader's rendition is acceptable. This operation is very useful; it makes me detect errors my eyes had not noticed.

I keep intending to record an audiobook of one of my poetry collections. I figure 'my' voice would be more acceptable there than on the fiction work (as well as it being a shorter book than one of the novels). Considering that I have a pretty decent home recording studio there's no real reason not to—other than finding the time.

A friend has suggested that I put one of my works into audio form with my own voice as well. But, considering the negative reaction I have to most audio book actor's voices, well, I'd hate to ruin a good book for someone.
But with that said, I have heard a few audio books done by very skilled, talented readers! Done well, an audio book can be very nice! I'm just not sure if I have the voice that could pull it off, and I doubt if I would ever be satisfied enough with the results to release it.

Kevin's first link indicated that $300 per 10,000 words is a good benchmark of what to expect a professional voice actor to charge (some more, some less). So, my 202,000-word verse-novel divided by 10,000 = 20.2 20.2 X $300 = $6,060.
That's almost enough motivation to do it myself - if I would ever consider doing it at all.
Perhaps a smaller work would be a fun project?
Farleagueranger may have the perfect learning opportunity!

What is the process for getting Word to read it back to you please?
