In advertising circles for the 'big print' and newspaper headlines, etc, they try to avoid using more than three words. The reason being that people do not remember phrases they see or hear in 'passing', of more than three words. I wonder if it applies to book titles?

I think it depends on the language hence the number of syllables. Also the prosody varies from language to language. English prosody is far more complex than French prosody. As a consequence, if the rhythm of an English title does not please the ear, it will not sound good.
