In the 1980s I assume? So none selling them for 10p then? If I'm remembering correctly, the charity shops in our town were in the church basements. I can't recall a Salvation Army or something similar in town until much later. There were two book stores in our area, a Coles (the popular chain store) and what became to be a pretty popular/well known independent bookstore in Ontario, "The Highway Bookshop". They most likely sold second hand books, as well as new, but I was still in high-school the last time I visited, so I don't remember many details. I just remember rows upon rows of shelves, stacked to the rafters with books.

Most charity shops here normally only have the read once and discard sort of books. There's only one that usually has very good books in (and decent CDs) but it is 10 miles away! Often worth a trip though. It is quite annoying though that they often only have, for example, part 1 of a trilogy, or part 3. Never complete sets. It makes you wonder what happens to the rest of them. I happily buy books from such places, but I never give mine to them. Because I discovered that when they have a surplus they sell them to some company that pays by the kilo. About 5p! I have no idea what they do with them because no one needs to buy paper items to pulp in to new paper, we give them that for free in our bins.
