Hi all,
So far I've published 5 Ebooks through Lulu without any issues. My latest, the 6th I followed all the same requirements for formatting my document as I had before, correct heading styles, TOC etc all looked good, in fact exactly as I'd formatted the previous 5 documents. The file, cover etc. all uploaded and went through the publishing process without a hitch and I got the big 'congratulations' message from Lulu at the end. However, when I downloaded the EPUB file from Lulu and opened it on Adobe Digital Editions, I found there were huge spaces between sentences in some areas, and no I don't mean at the end of chapters, just random spaces where a sentence breaks off and continues after a big blank space. These spaces don't exist in the uploaded document, so unless I'm missing something it seems that the Lulu conversion process has done this, or I have a problem with my Digital Editions. I took out a support ticket with Lulu and they just said they do not offer any file editing assistance. However, I'm not sure it is a file editing problem. I'm wondering now if it may be my version of Digital Editions, or something else. All my other files in the past uploaded to Lulu, converted, downloaded and opened in Adobe have always looked fine, it's just this last one that's the issue. Has anyone else had this issue before? Should I delete my Adobe and upload it again from the their internet site? I'm really at a loss this time. Thanks in advance.

Calibre is a good one. calibre-ebook.com/

There are a lot of pure readers you could try it in en.softonic.com/s/epub-readerBut if it still does not look right you could put it through Lulu's Wizard again via Revise. See if that fixes it. Maggie, who uses this forum at times, is the expert on ePubs.

So far I've deleted Adobe and downloaded it again from their site. The problem still existed. I've downloaded Calibre and it's same problem. I'll say it again, these spaces don't exist in my document which I formatted exactly as I had done in 5 previous Ebooks. It's either something I've missed here or the Lulu convertor has corrupted it. I have no idea what to try next, I think it's pointless trying another reader, I'm sure the problem would still be there. Somebody must have had this issue before. Looks like I'm going to have to accept that only the print version will be available for book no. 6

Try making a copy of the file you used on Lulu Press, convert it with Calibre or an online converter, then see if you have the same issue.

Their Wizard tools can achieve random glitches that may not appear this time.
Maybe someone may have had the same problem, but they may not read this forum. Not least because it's not Lulu's, who no longer have one.
Have you reported the problem to Lulu?

One way to check to see if there are formatting marks you're not aware of is to make a copy of your document, then convert it using an online converter, Calibre, or both. If different converters have the same issue of spaces being where they shouldn't be, you're overlooking something in the original file.
Another way to check if the Lulu Press converter messed up the conversion is to enter a help ticket with Lulu Press, which is closed until Monday morning.
Another set of eyes looking at the file could also spot something you may not be aware of.

BTW. You are on about ebooks? ePubs? Sorry, yes, it's an ebook issue, I've just realised I'm in the wrong forum. My apologies. Anyway, I have managed to sort it by trial and error. As I said in my original post, I've had no problems with this issue in 5 previous successfully published ebooks. So I ended up copying and pasting all the text from the 'faulty' Word doc into a copy of a previous document that had managed to go through the conversion without any glitches showing up in Adobe in the file downloaded from Lulu. I effectively had two novels in the same document then. I then deleted the other novel. That seemed to make the remaining document with the issues look like the one that was okay. However, I noticed that when I checked the formatting (by clicking on that musical note symbol on the tool bar) there were a few odd-looking little black squares in places. I'd seen these in previous documents I'd uploaded to the Lulu convertor, (including one that I paid a Lulu expert to format for me some years ago) but they never caused an issue before. So I highlighted the whole document, went into paragraphs, line and page breaks and unchecked the widows & orphans, keep with next and one other box that was still ticked. That helped, but one or two of these little black squares annoyingly remained. I figured it must have been a paragraph issue, so wherever these black squares remained, I highlighted the paragraph before and after each, went back into paragraphs, line and page breaks and oddly, those boxes I'd unchecked for the whole document still remained. So I went through the whole document like this so not a single black square remained. Uploaded it to Lulu, downloaded the converted file, copied it into Adobe and job done. Issue gone and now the ebook is pending distribution Unorthodox, I know, but this time I've written down (in pen in a notebook, lol) how to sort it if it occurs again. Once again, I wish to apologise for using the wrong page and many thanks to you for your input. xx

Your inputs seem to be creating clones!Sorry, yes, it's an ebook issue, I've just realised I'm in the wrong forum. My apologies. Anyway, I have managed to sort it by trial and error. I effectively had two novels in the same document then. I then deleted the other novel. That seemed to make the remaining document with the issues look like the one that was okay. That is peculiar if you have not had issues before using the same template. But it's not unusual for Lulu's Wizards to have a bit of a mental breakdown, messing up a conversion, but which is then OK when you Revise it back through the Wizard! However, I noticed that when I checked the formatting (by clicking on that musical note symbol on the tool bar) I never have that turned off. It's pretty much impossible to format pages with it off. there were a few odd-looking little black squares in places. I have no idea what they are. Formatting commands are often seen as text or a command symbol, (which are not printed of course.) But it is often possible to get those black squares in place of a font it does not have. A symbol for example. I'd seen these in previous documents I'd uploaded to the Lulu convertor, (including one that I paid a Lulu expert to format for me some years ago) but they never caused an issue before. So I highlighted the whole document, went into paragraphs, line and page breaks and unchecked the widows & orphans, They can cause strange formatting actions, I never use that option. keep with next and one other box that was still ticked. Issue gone and now the ebook is pending distribution A docx file for an ePub is quite simple really. Not many of the usual formatting options as used for the printed page are used.Unorthodox, I know, but this time I've written down (in pen in a notebook, lol) how to sort it if it occurs again. The older one gets ...Once again, I wish to apologise for using the wrong page and many thanks to you for your input. xx No problem. There are a lot to pick from!
