Does anybody know other self publishing sites/services similar to lulu that also offer a classic Pocket Book size of 4.25" x 6.87"? indesignskills.com/tutorials/standard-book-sizes/# These apparently do not: - www.ingramspark.com/plan-your-book/print/trim-sizes => closest is 4.25" x 7" - kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201857950 => no similar size, starts at 5" x 8" - nook.barnesandnoble.com/u/print-books-on-demand/379004275 => no similar size, starts at 5" x 8" - help.barnesandnoble.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4047/~/b%26n-press%3A-available-trim-sizes-and-paper-stock => closest is 4.25" x 7" What makes 4.25" x 6.87" special is that the ratio of width and height is the golden ratio 0.618... 4.25" x 7" is only a difference of 0.13" in height (3.3mm) but it destroys the largely unconscious message of harmony inherent in the golden ratio... So, does anybody know a site/service similar to lulu that offers this size? (Or is my only option to just go away for a few months and pray that when I come back in a few months or so lulu will still be in business and usable again?)

Bookbaby has that size as per a search I just did.
Pocket Book. 4.25" x 6.87" more info. Digest. 5.5" x 8.5" more info. US Trade. 6" x 9" more info. Comic Book. 6.625" x 10.25" more info. US Letter. 8.5" x 11" more info. Portrait. 8" x 10" more info. Large Portrait. 9" x 12" more info. Small Square. 7.5" x 7.5"

Thanks Maggie. At first sight BookBaby looks more like a rip-off, though, as if you had to order a number of books in advance for "print on demand"... But maybe that's just a first impression.
(Otherwise maybe I would consider 4.37" x 7" which IngramSpark and B&N Press have, comes closer to the golden ratio than 4.25" x 7", is just a bit too wide, 0.044" = 1.1 mm)

Ingram Spark does not even require you to order a proof. Zero cost right now. Coupon code INGRAMSPARK2020

Thanks again Maggie. I guess I understand, at IngramSpark not required to order a proof copy, instead a price for upload and edits. Has advantages and disadvantages, I would say. All selling shovels to miners forty-niners...

I didn't know it was only until May 31st. Thanks for the information. They will likely have another free 6 months or so starting October NANO2021.

"Please note that this promo code cannot be used in conjunction with a free ISBN."
Alain, I was checking out Ingram and saw the above, but If you want to buy your own ISBN number you might find this blog useful. It was given to me by Ron Miller. blog.reedsy.com/how-to-get-an-isbn/

I registered at IngramSpark earlier today; the registration process was smooth, my impression so far very good. For the pocket book I guess I will go for 4.37" x 7" (ratio 1.602), but I have yet to write most of the content of the book. What I have is the interior design, adapted now to the slightly larger size, still looking very good to me, even a tiny bit better than before, I think, and I also have the cover, that I have to yet to adapt slightly to the new size, hopefully that will still shine, too. But back to technical/business things... Will it be possible at IngramSpark to upload the book before it is finished and order a proof copy (or as many as it takes), as easily as on the old lulu.com site? For distribution I only see advantages so far. At lulu.com with "globalReach" the pocket book size was, as far as I recall, only eligible for distribution at Amazon (besides Lulu itself, of course). With IngramSpark I presume it would automatically become available at e.g. Amazon, B&N, etc. online? And brick and mortar book stores would be able to order it at a lower price, right? (They would look up the ISBN and instantly see where they could order it?) Something which I guess was not possible with Lulu? larika : Good to know about ISBNs at IngramSpark; luckily I already have a set of 100 ISBNs (minus the few I already used), so not an issue for me personally.

You should upload the book before the 30th and use the coupon code INGRAMSPARK2020. Don't approve for distribution. After the 30th or 31st there is an upload fee of $50. They are at the top of the foodchain. All bookstores, all libraries, all online retailers, plus espresso instant printing machines around the world. The works.

FYI, I managed to upload that book to ingram spark, but was hairier than expected... PDF for main text: Did not like grayscale images at higher resolution than 300dpi and b/w images at higher resolution than 600dpi. I only had 4 small images in there (rather logos), which I scaled in latex to the best looking size, so created them to scale, but would not have been a showstopper, could have checked a box saying roughly "I will not complain if those images come out different than I expected". And required an ISO standard PDF/X... PDF. PDF for cover: Also required a standard PDF/X, and the actual cover is only in roughly the top right corner of a larger generated PDF template. Which is weird, but I managed that, too. Gory details would be here... www.ingramspark.com/hubfs/downloads/file-creation-guide.pdfThe coupon code was accepted, and after that another difference to Lulu: Someone is going to review the book before I can even order a proof copy... All in all, I guess you can tell that their main business is distribution of books, not developing one. Anyways, thanks a lot again and will see how appealing the result will be, or not...

Yes, they definitely do not spoonfeed you. They are used to working with bigger publishers who have a team working with them. It will become second nature. And the wait for approval from their staff, annoying at first, but ultimately you'll be grateful. They catch things you might have missed. And if you take any cover shortcuts, they will block you. All for the best in the end.
