I'd love to be "illustrator" but my art professor would be horrified that I am now doing illustrations lol. She was so specific about the paintings we did. I also love cartoons, she would be aghast at one of her past students drawing cartoons. Maggie I am using cartoons for the book you suggested I do. I'm presently scanning in my illustrations and painting them on the computer. Thanks again.

Larika,
I believe Mr Lomas has a profile on the board, but he's just been too busy doing important schtuff saving England from the world to participate.
As for your art professor being aghast at you drawing cartoons, you might be surprised. My experience was a good teacher [like a good mentor] is there to show you a variety of tools you can use to do a variety of tasks, it's up to you to find the best fit for your talents and interests. While in class the specificity on the tasks to be done is about the student following instruction and learning technique, but most teachers get a sense of satisfaction when former students find what works for them.

Larika! Cartooning is the greatest art. Each time I see your avatar I'm thinking, did she do that? Anyway, you have been keeping this talent of yours a secret for so long. Time to let it loose. You should do 20 books. Can't wait to see.

Your art professor is a snob. An illustration is any work of art that tells a story. It's really what the word "illustration" suggests: it is something that illuminates, or makes clear. Ninety percent of art history is art that tells a story so ninety percent of art history is illustration.
And if he wants to turn his nose up at cartooning specifically...well, then, I can only suppose that he doesn't approve much of anyone from Cruikshank and Nast to Daumier and Monet.

Unfortunately at the end of the year we had to present our work to the examiners, who seemed to be in agreement with our professors at the college. We were each given a small area in our large art room to display our work which the examiners would grade us on. We all conformed not wanting to fail!!! I have branched out since then. When I lived in Portsmouth., New Hampshire I did some political cartoons for our local paper. The editor would call me up and suggest something and I would send him the cartoon. It was good seeing my cartoons in print. Ron I have finished drawing all the illustrations for my childrens' book (The one Maggie suggested I write based on my poem) and I have finished the first cartoon. I scanned in the drawing and painted it on the computer. It took absolutely ages as I've only just started using this way to paint. I still haven't mastered shading, so I've just used solid blocks of colour. I'm still trying to send you and Maggie the cartoon for your critiques, but have been unsucessful so far. Sphinx-Cameron has suggested a way that I can do it. I'll keep on trying. Thanks for all your help.

Ron I tried. The picture I sent showed up on my end of the message but the ricipient couldn't see it. I did it the way Sphinx-Cameron suggested "through the web." Anyway it's just as well,I looked carefully at my 2 finished cartoons and am not satisfied with them.I think there has to be some shading, so I will try and rectify. before I attempt to send for critique.
