Well, I’m very pleased to say I’ve just had a message from a very nice lady at Lulu. I haven’t tried her suggestion yet, but her suspicion is that my ambiguous error is nothing to do with my pdf, but is actually down to browser compatibility. I can honestly say I never considered that as a possibility, but I shall give it a go. 🙂

Hi everyone, can I ask for some help please? I've been a long-term user of Lulu, but following the recent changes to the site I cannot get the interior pages of a book to upload. I've always purchased the small paperback book (pocket book, is it?) and my Word documents have all been 10.8cm x 17.46cm. The last one I ordered was in April this year and I've checked the Word doc and the PDF and they are both exactly this size. I've tried this week to upload a new book of these exact dimensions and it simply won't upload. Lulu's online guide isn't terribly helpful to me, as it's description of the process to convert a Word document to a PDF does not relate to the settings in my version of Word (2010). I have though gleaned that I may now need to be adding some width and height for bleed dimensions (I understand the principle, but have never had to before). So, adding some 'bleed' to my Word document changes all my formatting, reducing the document from 408 pages to 371 pages. I've then exported this to PDF (and made sure fonts are embedded) and tried to upload this as a test but it still gets the same error message. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be? If this is correct, and that I need to add the bleed where I haven't before, then I will need to reformat the book and also cover which was carefully created for the spine width of a 408 page document. Any help and suggestions gratefully received.

I had errors using edge but not with chrome. I have other problems. My word template is small landscape, but lulu thinks my pdf is US a4. I cannot get it to use the size as per the word document. I don't know what happens when I export to pdf

I do hate it when some help says try another browser. I usually reply - I have been using this one for decades, and it works for all sites but yours, WTF should I have to change just to use your site? Sort your site out to work on everything, even Android. It's a bit akin to the advice to turn off your firewall. Er, bugger off!

Well, unless Lulu have ironed out a lot of bugs since earlier in the year, the suggestion to change browser has worked. I've installed Firefox and given it a go and everything uploaded first time. Now, just to see if it still prints okay, as I faffed about with the files so much trying to get them to work that I wouldn't be at all surprised if my bleed is a million miles off and my spine ends up wrapped around my front cover. But, hey ho!

It's bad form for sites to only create software that will only work in and via specific browsers. It's surprising how many people still use IE or Edge. One of the reasons it is often not listed as the top one still, is most people now use the browsers that come with their Smartphones. Usually Chrome.

See also lulu.boards.net/thread/604/supported-trim-size-bleed-issue - I don't think it's a matter of resizing your pdf to include a white rim - I think the white rim is entirely Lulu-generated, facilitating the cutting of the outer 'waste' edge of the paper. Theoretically, that note should not even be there as it is superfluous and confuses the issues. If you include that white rim in your pdf then you WILL have a white rim around the edge where you don't want one. If a note must be there, it should be worded differently ... anyway - I asked Lulu ... we'll see what comes back.

After further digging: Page 11/12 of the downloadable PDF (prior to uploading the interior file) will solve the bleed error/addition mystery.
