I'm still hoping that some new system will at last enable the 'insertion' printing of books with colour plates (i.e. normal text paper where text, and inserting colour paper where needed for colour images); the books would lose some of the $$$ weight at checkout. I agree. I couldn't believe the difference in price between a black and white book with a few colour pictures and a full black and white book.

larika the technology obviously exists, it's just a matter of implementing it; but, to do so there are hurdles, and someone has to be willing to jump over them, and those benefitting be willing to pay for them. A book with a few inserted colour pages will still be more expensive than a plain b/w book, but not as expensive as a full colour book - and if demand is not there, the 'in between' version will remain elusive. For the moment ... give it time ...

Sorry the previous comment was duplicated. It must have happened on one of my very early morning sessions.

Do any of the beta testers remember the new / additional formats that are offered? Is there anything from our wish lists? landscapes? squares?

Fairy Stories By Elizabeth Keimach Paperback: $16 .21 By Elizabeth Keimach. tasmanian artist. The above is an example of just a few colour plates in my book of fairy stories for children. (with only 86 pages.) I tried a black and white version and it was a fraction of the price. How much time must we give them? sigh

When it comes to these fora,
Sphinx-Cameron you clearly prefer the latin plural of forum. However I still prefer the anglicized version forums. Both are correct and it's just a matter of preference. I didn't know both forms were correct until I looked it up on google. However Sphinx-Cameron your form does sound more scholarly.

I've learned a few obscure usages through the years, self-study as opposed to formal.

I didn't know both forms were correct until I looked it up on google. Google is a search engine. You probably looked it up in a dictionary you found with Google.
By the way: If you enter an internet address on Google instead of directly in the address bar, the Google (or other search engines) search needs an additional 0.3W power. That is not that much. But: Goggle has 270 000 search queries per minute.
And the search queries of each of us consume as much power per month as an old 60W bulb that burns for three hours. If you do not have a dictionary of your preference, try en.wiktionary.org

Anyone who wants to play with the Beta can. It's not a closed or invite only beta, we simply haven't advertised its existence broadly. beta.lulu.com/We're updating it regularly, but it is still wonky with some features. Edit: Forgot to mention that your Lulu.com sign in will not work on Lulu Beta. If you've used Lulu xPress, that sign in will work. Otherwise, you'll need to create a new sign in profile. Once we migrate content the profiles will all be merged so your old Lulu info will port over.

(with only 86 pages.) I tried a black and white version and it was a fraction of the price. How much time must we give them? sigh This is one of the areas where traditional printing still has an edge (let alone all of the other fancy things you can do, from foil-stamping and mixing types of paper to die-cutting, embossing and a virtually infinite choice of book sizes). Adding even a single red period in a POD book will nearly double the unit cost...which is crazy. Another way in which traditional printing has an edge is that the unit cost goes drastically down as the number of books in an order increases, where the difference is not nearly as marked in POD printing. For instance, 250 copies of a 200-page full-color trade paperback printed traditionally would cost about $14 each, while 750 copies of the same book would be $5 each. 200 copies traditionally printed: $3550 / POD $1650 750 copies traditionally printed: $4060 / POD $6190 (The POD prices are based on Lulu's price generator) The downside, of course, is that you will have to have a large number of books on hand, so storage and distribution will be a problem (and probably an expense), so the argument is really only in favor of traditional printing if one is interested in quantity printing rather than small batches or individual copies. (By the way, one way in which color can be added economically to a traditionally printed book is to gather all of the images into a single signature rather than have the color images scattered throughout.)

If I print only black and white on a colour printer, it does not really cost more today than on a black and white printer.
A competitor of Lulu therefore offers mixed books: I specify how many pages are in colour. The price is calculated accordingly: x times black and white and x times colour. This means that it would be technically possible. The provider is called epubli and is based in Germany. Disadvantages: His site is only in German. And: You cannot use your own ISBN.
