I would like to give people who order the printed copy of my book a free PDF (or Epub) when they purchase the deluxe hardcover version of my book.
The hardcover books can take weeks to reach buyers, and I'd like to give them something to read while waiting. And, in my case the hardcover book will weigh something like 3 pounds. It will make a nice collectors item, but not be completely convenient for reading.
Has anyone found a way to do this? Currently I am thinking they can email me a copy of their order receipt and I'll email them the pdf . . but, that will be a pain to do the fulfillment. I wish there were some easier way to do this.

Thank you. I have the paperback and digital versions in Global Distribution. For the deluxe edition I am planning to limit it to Lulu only.
My hope was that there was someway to do a custom acknowledgement (receipt) per project and that I could add a link to the PDF to it. I sent Lulu a recommendation that they provide a method.
One option that I'm thinking about is to simply add a page to the book and include a link to the PDF on that page. I don't like that because books last forever and links sometimes go out of date ..but, it is the simplest option I've thought of at this point.
Another option would be if Lulu could give me the email address of purchasers of my book....

If you have an about the author page in the book, try adding the email address you want requests for the PDF sent to. If buyers are truly in a hurry they'll buy the Ebook.

Hi, add a QR code to one of the pages already existing in your book. Sign up to a free drive (Google or Dropbox or similar) and upload your pdf there. Link your pdf to the QR code in your book manuscript before publishing it. There is no guarantee that only the book buyers will access the link. It will eventually be available on the internet for anyone to read/use. Sorry - no other solution that I can see.

Frankly, passing out a PDF sounds like an invitation to piracy.

Frankly, passing out a PDF sounds like an invitation to piracy. Agreed. I am making the PDF available, but as you said: Piracy is a REAL problem. There's nothing to be done about that, other than to not offer the PDF for sale, and, "That horse is already out of the barn." With 20/20 hindsight letting it out there may have been a mistake. Although, I have sold a LOT of PDFs, so .. I guess/hope it all evens out in some way. My current plan is to just update the description of the book (the deluxe hardcover edition) to say, "Email a screen capture of your receipt to and you will be sent a free PDF of the book to read while waiting"

I publish mainly textbooks. I often get emails asking me for the free pdf version. Teachers do need that for their lessons and Powerpoint presentations especially with Covid and the Remote Learning now. However, giving a pdf is just kissing my hard work and royalties goodbye. I worked hard again to find a solution. My solution was to create a companion website on which I offer digital version (not a pdf but a protected page) of my books (for a fee). To be honest, I get a lot of revenue without costing me any third party expenses. Not sure if this is something that would suit you.

A bare-bones e-book? With the hardcover having all the trimmings? (Since I don't know the content of the book, only you can decide it - but I wouldn't 'give away' my hard work.)

I don't see the point of adding a page with a link. By the time they see the page, surely they've got the book in their hands?

The easiest way to do this would be to enter a text for each book on Lulu (or whoever), which is then automatically triggered by the order and sent to the buyer as a personal thank you letter. I can't remember if this used to exist at Lulu's (not per book, but per author), or if it had been proposed in previous years. Unfortunately, Lulu has deleted the old discussions and the proposals can no longer be viewed, supported or commented on for almost a year. feedback.lulu.com

You used to be able to set up a thank you email on Lulu Press, but the flubgrade last April did away with it among other functions.
