Hi Valerie. Happy New Year
Ron, I love your new art avatar.
Thanks! It's from a portrait of me that my brother did last year.

Your brother is an artist too!? Ron, what did your parents do? Now I'm thinking that they were heads of the New York Symphony Orchestra.

Skill-sets can tend to run in family or genetic lines, even when the main talents may skip individuals. Think of it like anything else you can inherit genetically.
One example would be a family of mostly European genetics, with intermarriage several generations ago of Indigenous or Native American as well as sub-Saharan African individuals. Generations later without more admixture of Indigenous or African genetics you'll find some kids in the sample family are displaying all European genetics, while others may show a mix of any of the three.
The same holds true with skills or talents. My older siblings share to varying degrees the same basic set of analytical abilities I have. All of us can craft things to varying degrees, and at least a couple of us could have been chefs. My younger half-sister is the one whose cooking you really don't want to test your digestive processes with.

Ron,
Drafting does engage the same basic skill-set as 'higher' art, though as far as I'm concerned drafting can be termed an art all in itself. As well, a secretary utilizes the same basic skill-set as a writer.
What anyone achieves in life is a function of basic talent and life context [which covers not only familial care and schools but also being in the right place at the right time to grasp opportunities as open other venues]. It also takes focus and determination to follow through after all is said and done.
My brothers hold Ph.D.s, our parents had HS diplomas. Different times, different life contexts.

Hm, the genius and the artist posting.
I just went to the old lulu forums looking for my copyright list, noting the 222 countries that have copyright laws different from the US and I couldn't find it. But, in my search, I came across the kindest thing you said about me. Too shy too repeat it here, but thank you Ron. It made my day.

Maggie,
If you're referring to me as 'the genius', you're wrong. I've been tested, and I'm no genius though I am happy to say my cognitive functions haven't diminished between testing dates twenty-odd years apart.
I'm also not scary-gifted which is just below really-scary-gifted [genius] which is below Jumping-Jehosephat-scary-gifted [Alien Life Form]. Depending on the scale used I tend to compare favorably to somewhat-smarter-than-the-average two-toed sloth.

hmm...I'm a very slow and careful reader; I watch the words. Take it, man. Artist, though, is the highest good, in my view. They are the reason for living.

I may have a scary range of abilities, but I'm no 'Sheldon Cooper'. I prefer competent in a human way, as it's better than having villagers with torches and pitchforks waiting outside.
