At the instigation of my old alma mater, I've created a blog site devoted to book cover design bookcoverbasics.tumblr.com/In addition to covering many of the basic premises of good design, I have solicited input from a number of working professionals: illustrators, art directors, publishers, designers, etc., with more to come. While the blog is largely slanted toward students, I have tried to make it of use to anyone interested in book cover design, beginner, amateur or professional.

I love the bandaids on the Dracula cover. I had to laugh out loud at that one. It is a very, very, informative blog, Ron. There is a ton of good information there. And yet, in our haste, so many of us go the way of all the world...

For Those Who Fail to Click the Link, here is a quote from the very bottom, if I may, Ron:
"...a book cover is not meant to please the author. In fact, I don’t think that an author should even be involved in the design of their book’s cover. A book cover has one and only one purpose: to get a potential reader to stop and look at the book—and, hopefully, pick it up and buy it. It has to attract attention from among hundreds of other books—in much the same way someone might try to draw attention to themselves in a crowd. The cover is shouting, “Hey! Look at me!” And if it fails to get you to look, it’s failed as a cover."

And yet, in our haste, so many of us go the way of all the world... Thanks! That was an experimental cover done just for my portfolio. It was fun! And pretty easy, too: a photo of my daughter, two bandaids...and voila! Glad, too, to hear that you find the blog interesting!

I feel like a guppy in the Pacific when I scan through it. Maybe some day I'll have the time to do it right.

I found the section on "Deconstructing an Illustration" fascinating. It's great the way you combine various elements together and create an excellent book cover.

Ian Koviak of TheBookDesigners is going to be contributing the step-by-step process of creating one of his beautiful covers.
