You don't necessarily have to invert a whole block this way to get black text, especially as it results in background colours being inverted as well. You can lift the text off the picture by masking it and a bit of pre-processing leaving you with a transparent background and black text layer. You may have to clean up the result a bit here and there but once you have that you can can paste it back against a solid background hiding the text underneath. Or by adding it as a top layer to a semi-transparent window it will cover up the existing letters underneath without messing up the colours. It's not a long or complicated procedure but if you've got hundreds of pictures and captions to process then it is going to take a while to convert them all this way.
Thanks a lot Bizzley. I'll have to experiment on this. I didn't switch to black in all pictures because, in some pictures, the white captions seem to be a lot better. I have just launched a new 30-page project in the comic book format. It is spiral bound probably because it has not enough pages. The manufacturing cost is 7.25€. I am anxious to see the result because there is no choice for color and paper: it has to be premium on 70g paper.

I have lost the uncaptioned originals, so I copied the captions under the pictures. I received the printed booklet (104p) today. The result is good enough for me. I have kept the 6x9" format with ordinary colours on white paper, softbound. The margins are minimum, but Lulu has added a 1cm white margin to the top, to the left and to the right of each page, but 1.1cm to the bottom. Next time I might try the full-bleed possibility.

Today (2021-02-16) I received my test of the Lulu comic format. The dimensions are W 17cm X H 26cm. The paper is photographic and glossy. The colors are splendid. As the booklet only has 30 pages, the signature is stapled. The beauty of the result if worth praising. The manufacturing cost - 7.25€ - is about twice as much as in the novel format, white paper, ordinary colors. So this option should be reserved for remarkable creations. I uploaded the PDF to Lulu on the 29th of January. The booklet was printed on the 3rd of February, and sent on the 8th through Jersey Post (of Jersey island?) by a certain Edgaras Zaromskis, so I suppose the booklet was manufactured outside the UK. The picture below is a screen capture of a PDF page. It doesn't do justice to the actual result.
