When designing a children’s book aimed at little ones it can be difficult to find fonts that balance childlike charm with stylish flair. Here’s a list of fonts that will delight young and old. They are all free to use for commercial projects.
Quicksand Caroni Comfortaa Linotte Spilt Ink Woodford Bourne Helsinki Headhunter Firecat Lilly

There are some nice fonts, e.g. Linotte (but I don't like Spilt Ink). Helsinki, Firecat and Headhunter are capital letters only.
(Not only) for a children's book, I have several demands on the writing:
- readability (funny is often not readable)
- matching the illustrations
- all needed special characters (depending on the language äöüèéàñßɔ́ɛ, ...)
One place where there are also quite nice fonts, some bread fonts and many title fonts that are not available anywhere else, is Peter Wiegel's site: www.peter-wiegel.de

I think that the first criteria for a typeface meant for a children's book is clarity and readability.
