OK, have at it, Gang. What have I done wrong besides make it low tech?

Everything is perfect, imo, except you need more contrast, back and front. It needs to attract attention and be clear as a thumbnail because that is how it will first be seen. I am wearing four point viewing glasses and I had to zoom in to appreciate the fonts and image.

It's not bad at all! At least it's certainly going in the right direction. You might take a clue from Maggie's comment regarding contrast: everything but the "13" is impossible to read in thumbnail form...and that is the form in which most people will probably first see the cover. I would not use a decorative typeface for text, such as on the back cover. The 13 seems unrelated to the rest of the title. I would close up the spacing...and perhaps even consider making the 13 even larger and letting "Creepy Rhymes" overlap it. The entire title could be made much larger, too. Finally, two typefaces are more than enough and if you want a littler fancier one for the 13, choose one that is a little less decorative. I didn't have time to find an alternative typeface for the number so I just erased the fiddly bits.

Thanks, Guys! Yeah, I knew the contrast was a little low when I looked at it in grayscale/B&W, but I love the Halloween orange colors! I worked a long time to get the moon to the shade I liked, but you are right. It needs to be brighter. As Stephen King likes to say, you must be willing to kill your children. Sighhhh...
I'll work to brighten it up and get a little more creative with the title scheme/fonts, etc. Probably go with a sans serif on the back too.
Thanks again! Back to work...

All excellent advice.

I'll do my own. But thanks to Ron, I have a new idea for the title lettering. Just need to find a day when I can work on it. Probably not this week. Hopefully next.

OK. I took your advice and I slew my children. Here are two more iterations. I choked back the tears and brightened my beloved moon, brightening the yellow and lowering its contrast to enhance the raven. As you can see, I have a real hard time giving up the Halloween orange for a Halloween book, but the yellow and red sort of adds up to orange, right?. (Halloween is BLACK and ORANGE, blast it!)
Regardless, I think the more yellow "13" is a bit more eye-catching than the orange-ish one. Whatcha tink?

Either one works very nicely! The moon is still plenty orange enough to look Hallowe'enish, too.
I might lean a little more toward the second one since I am not too much a fan of drastic changes in shading on type since it tends to break up letters and figures much in the same way that camouflage patterns work.

I like the second one. Can you kill your baby a little more? White for the 13? I don't like the gradient and there is too much heat. You need a huge splash of cool for balance.

I really like the red and yellow 13. I think that version works very well. Good job BlueAndGold
