Some useful hints there. Unfortunately few understand kerning. Then they shouldn't be working with typography. It's like saying, "I want to write but I don't understand grammar."

Don't do it like a well known Italian chocolate factory: In the past, this would have been written by hand by a graphic artist or a type painter. Then it would not only have been beautiful, but also unique. But look at this: With the office PC and a commonplace font. Not even the transitions are right. Well, maybe that suits a product that consists of 53% sugar, 35% fat and 13% chocolate, but calls itself "chocolate"... on the top: old version on the bottom: new version

But that’s the rub Ron. Just sit down at a PC with Microsoft Word and bash away. Choosing what typefaces to use is for them like having a child’s coloring book with a pencil case of colored pens. No study, research, learning or any thing associated with typography even enters their minds. One only has to look back over the last twenty years of Lulu’ing to see that nothing changes. Sadly, Lulu and other self-publishing venues have to shoulder some responsibility for this by making the publication of a book---without editing or vetting of any kind---too easy. "Just sit down at a PC...and bash away," as you put it, then push another button and your book is in print.
