For many years now, I used a variety of PDF programmes / apps, none were Adobe products, and these worked fine. Now all of a sudden they do not, Lulu rejects them. Is this a known thing? Or a bug perhaps? I am actually leaving Lulu (after 17 years!) but I need to work on one last revision before I vamoose, but no go so far. Any ideas anyone?

Save As, Options, check ISO. Embed fonts, within Word as well. I'll have to go in tomorrow to pinpoint exactly where this is located ... Haven't used it in a while. Someone here can fill in the gap or I'll get back to you.

Scribus should work. LibreOffice Writer should work as well. -> do not use the PDF icon in the ruler, but the menu: File -> PDF export (LibreOffice can import a lot of files, including doc)

I am actually leaving Lulu (after 17 years!) You are not alone.... but you found the right place. This forum was the Lulu Forum, hosted by Lulu. Then it was the independent Lulu Forum, hostet by some Lulu authors, after Lulu wanted to close it. The intention was to stay the Lulu Forum, but after all that happened in spring, summer, autumn last year, it became the Self Publishing Hub. Lulu is still a topic, but we discuss also other print on demand services.
If you are looking for an alternative provider:
There is not "the" alternative to Lulu. Following your needs, you may be happy with some of the following (resumed of some discussions here on the forum): printed books directly with IngramSpark (with a coupon several month/year free instead of 47$ - maybe the free ISBN is not available with the coupon) (there is also an package print/e-pub) --- there are some learnings in the beginning; e-books maybe a little bit tricky e-books with Kindle for Amazon only e-books with another provider for everything, but not Amazon (see below): some forum users are very happy with draft2digital.com (including print - that is new) --- good and fast support check streetlib.com for e-books and audio-books, they distribute with a hudge number of shops outside the US, including Europe, Asia, South America, Africa.
If you already found an other solution: If you already found an other solution, please share your toughs and later your experience here in the forum.

And thanks to you both too. Regarding who I am moving on to, then I am already there. It's Amazon KDP. For years I had listings where my KDP Ebooks were alongside the Lulu paperbacks on the Amazon site. All bar one of my books is now in print form with Amazon itself. Back to the bar one in a sec. I stayed with Lulu for one reason and one reason only; the publishing platform which allowed multiple (and different) source files to be uploaded and hey presto, one perfect PDF. For Lulu to remove this, to me, was like snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, such a shot in their own foot. Seeing as it was all I was still on Lulu for, then with that gone, there was no reason to remain. My still being on there, for now, is simply tidying up before I go, and I needed, and still do, more proof copies for editing purposes (nowt like the book itself for use as an editing tool), yet, the file, or type of file let's say, which Lulu accepted without problem, for years, is now being rejected. It's not absolutely essential I do this, at least not at Lulu, but it was convenient. I'll give it one last go, using Word (oh boy, I am not looking forward to the page numbering!), if that fails, then, I'll use some other POD crowd, perhaps one of the ones mentioned above. I could of course use Amazon, but I don't want it going live until I am sure of the print copy. The private setting is one thing Lulu still does have over their rivals, when I can get the file to load! Righto, back to it.

skinteastwood:
If you use Word 2007, I highly recommend you use the goPDF add on. It works great not only for interior files but also covers. You can set the dimensions precisely. The Word 2007 SaveAsPDF does not work.
If you use Word 2016, then you can use SaveAs/[location]/PDF/Options Button/... but here is where I forget the correct options (Maggie can help here). I think I used PDF/A compliant with success one time, but after that I returned to my Word 2007 and doPDF (which has worked many times for me as well as just 2 weeks ago).

Last I checked Word doesn't offer PDFx. You have to also embed fonts, select only fonts in file. Have to hunt down where that is exactly. Yesterday I couldn't remember how to make a soft return. 🤕

I still haven't played with Word 2016 much, but I did poke around in it over my breakfast bowl.
Here is the window where you find the Save Options button:
Also, in the lower right you will see the little Tools drop-down. Under that you will find a Save Options selection. Here is where you can embed fonts and choose whether to apply it to all documents or just this one. Also in this drop down there is a place where you can select to preserve image quality in PPI.
And then, the Options button:
Caveat: I still use Word 2007 and doPDF for my publishing. I haven't yet got my feet wet with Word 2016.

Ta again for all this, folks, very helpful. I managed to load it after reverting to Word and using print to gopdf. Now, digressing slightly. Does anyone know if Lulu has totally discontinued Live Chat, ie, with a human? That bot thing has you running round in circles, useless really. But each time I've been on over the last few days, there has no option to chat with a real person.

Very few positive reports in that arena, unfortunately.

Yeah, annoying. I have several tickets with them, months old, no action from them whatsoever.
