Has anybody done this? By publishing book file as paper back with a local printer for example to save on high shipping costs. I just wondered and considered it years ago. And was the printed book any good or just junk?

I did that and made the same mistake both times. I thought about whether to print 100 or 200 and let the lower unit price push me towards 300. Now books are piling up in the basement.... From a financial point of view, the calculation still worked out.
In principle, that's not a bad idea. I have produced historical books both times for an appropriate occasion (festival).

Check out MyBestSeller home.mybestseller.co.uk/print-book/

If one is willing to make an investment by having a large quantity of books printed then it is certainly worth investigating what resources are available. Local does not necessarily mean on ones doorstep. It may mean in the same geographical area, county or country. But as with everything research is essential as perhaps are recommendations. A visit to an establishment is essential together with a discussion on resources. Is content printed at the same location as the covers are. Where does the binding takes place. Are there different presses for black & white and for colour. How will the finished products be shipped to you. What are the minimum print runs? A large proportion of print costs are pre press and machine setup charges. Runs of a few hundred may be uneconomical and one may need to commit to a thousand or more. I know a number of people who have used printninja.com/ and were very happy with the results.
