I just got back my sample (a proof ordered before making the book go live) on Lulu, and it looks great but the binding isn't quite what I expected! It appears to just be a paperback book with a hardcover glued around it, you can even see the paperback spine in the space between them. My experience with Lulu paperbacks has been pretty good, so I'm not worried about it falling apart, but it just feels a bit strange. Is this just how hardbacks from Lulu are? It's a 6x9 with about 325 pages. Attached a some sample picture:

Offset printing is where you see the stitched binding with hardcovers.

Yeah, that stitched binding is more along the lines of what I expected to see. I figured it wouldn't be as nice as an offset hardcover, but not like this, ha ha. Thanks for the info.

I've got three with a fabric [wick-like] perfect binding [which I retired due to cost per copy]. For a better result if you don't want to order a print run from printninja.com try IngramSpark.

My suggestion is contact Lulu support and send them a photo of that and see if they will send another one. In my experience if a proof is damaged or incorrect Lulu has been very nice about replacing the proof copy for free. I've gotten two or three of them.

Lulu has replaced a number of mis-strikes for me too. They are very good about that.

Well, a quick follow up for those curious, I did contact Lulu support and they just got back to me to let me know that this IS what their hardcovers are like right now. So that's a bit of a bummer, but good to have an answer from them, at least.

Perhaps you asked them the wrong question.

I checked out PrintNinja Cameron and it looks good. I was surprised to learn that the owner Russell, relocated with his family to Shenzhen, China and started the company there. However I think it would be more expensive to print books with them than Lulu and other POD companies.
