I've been thinking (I can do that confined to an armchair with the flu) about why I write. As my husband keeps telling me you are a good artist stick to art. However I can't do in art what I'm trying to do in my writing. That's why I generally make my eBooks free and will probably make "Stolen" and "Joy's story" free again. It's something I've been doing most of my life. I even used to lobby Parliament if I felt strongly about an issue. In my writing I'm trying to raise awareness about injustices as I see them. The inequality of women in Saudi Arabia in "Stolen" and "Joy's Story". The cruel treatment and lack of awareness of the conditions animals are kept in "The Pig Child". The horrors of Auschwitz in my "Short Stories, The Holocaust and Beyond." and even in my children's books I'm trying to break steriotypes. "Maggie the Witch" who is a very good person who loves animals. and the good Dr Wolf not your steriotypical big bad wolf. I wondered why others write.

Larika! Maggie is a witch! But a retired one.
I did a book with Ron Copis years ago called I Took My Witch Hat or My Witch Hat.
Why I write?... The words are in my head. If I don't write them I will talk to myself. I finally concluded that even if I've had no time to write much this past decade, I'm still a writer. The sentences write in my head as I live from day to day. I see the world through books. As in, that would make a great first line, that would make a great children's book, I have to write that book.
And also please tell your husband that Maggie says you are a good writer.

I've been creating stories in my head to relieve boredom since I was young, makes it easier to fall asleep as well as relieving the tedium of a class you just can't quite sleep through.
For the most part now when I have the chance to write, it's about getting the characters [yammering for me to finish telling their stories] to shut the hell up. It's hard to start a new story to fall asleep to for a guided dream when old characters keep complaining.

Yes I must admit that once I embark on a book the characters come alive and speak to me.

I write because I enjoy it. As a child, I remember a teacher reading out one of my stories about the aftermath of a nuclear war in front of morning assembly. I did not take up writing until my forties. I opted for very early retirement from the steelworks and have now penned forty-one novels. I am under no illusion that I'll make a fortune from my books, but am inspired knowing someone is reading my stories. What would I do without my writing?

Larika, that's my favourite description to date.
Husley, forty-one! How do you start one? I'll take tips from you.
I finally got my new novel idea this morning thanks to this forum.

Hulsey your story is so much like my friend Sally's. Her teacher used to read out her stories all the time. Like you her writing ability manifested itself at an early age, but her parents decision to not let her continue her education plus marriage and children took priority and she didn't wtite again until much, much later. She belongs to my writing group and we marvel at the stories and poems she reads to us. She has had several poems and short stories published. I'm trying to persuade her to write a novel and she is considering making one of her stories into a novel. Sally was made to leave school at 16 as her mother felt she should get a job and contribute to the houshold finances. When my American husband heard that this often happened in England he was absolutely amazed. He felt that the parents should encourage their children to stay in school and get an education to get a better job.
