I think it's important not to delete or hide posts or threads that may make us look bad as a forum. The truth is the truth; let it be.

Transparency is good.
But if someone publishes Private Messages without the person who wrote them intending them to be public, I think they should not be publicly visible as soon as possible. (personally, If I write a private message, I wrote not the same way, as if I write a post for the forum)
And probably also if we need to protect someone (maybe even from themselves).
I then take the view that we move the post or thread to a place where it can no longer be seen by everyone (e.g. moderators or senior members, or ...), but remains there. At the moment it is in the moderator's forum, but we can also create a part accessible only for members staying with us for more than x month or having made more than y posts or something like that. Maybe in read only mode. (This is not a plan, just an idea or the start for a discussion.)

I agree that private messages should remain private. Everything else, public.

Transparency depending on the context of the people involved can be either good or bad. Transparency or its value also varies by culture.
Suppose you know someone whose finances are limited, who after saving money for months buys a new outfit and proudly wears it. You consider the outfit horrendously hideous and you could tell the person your honest opinion. The question is should you? Sometimes transparency can be more than a bit brutal.
Clothing is a slightly different matter. Sometimes it's worn to protect from the elements. At other times clothing is worn as part of mating rituals, to show position in a hierarchy, to keep individuals from acting on baser impulse, and so on. Do I care if someone wears clothing that costs more than our mortgage? No, as it's irrelevant to me, but some people will care.
I would posit the objective of the fora is communication, ostensibly about self-publishing / writing / cover art, and other subjects as needed and / or desired. In a perfect world, adults will act like adults meaning normally courteous, respectful, and polite toward others -- unfortunately I don't live in a perfect world.
Time for me to enjoy the rain sans supercell tornado.
