I’m giving up on some of my Internet software subscriptions so I’m probably retiring from creating books and publishing. Thirty years is probably enough. But I’m quite happy to continue receiving the monthly revenues as I’m sure much of my work is still of benefit or interest to people. I’ll stick around here for a while even though Maggie has a new BF and has rejected me.

I was thinking about it the last few days and refrained from suggesting it, but here we are.

Why close the forum because one member is retiring?

Granted there is not a lot of chat around here recently, but we must remember that there are many visitors to this site without logins. 200 in the past 24 hours, in fact. (Although many of those may be robots and webcrawlers.)
I believe this site serves a good community purpose for those seeking help with their questions about self-publishing. I have to believe that many have been helped here. I know I have - a number of times! There is a pretty significant body of experience here.
This site also serves as a rallying point for when something significant happens to the world of the self-published. Bear witness to the burst of memberships and activity that blossomed here when Lulu flubbed their system upgrade. That was an eye-opener. There are a LOT of folks who are aware of and visit this site though you never see them register or log in.
No, this site isn't about individuals. It's about helping individuals.
Finally, regardless of all of the above, this is Admin's baby. It lives or dies at HIS whim.

Why close the forum because one member is retiring? The need for it has dissipated.

There will always be individuals who seek assistance by locating an existing topic which bears on the issue they're dealing with. The fact they don't register and post doesn't indicate a lack of need, it simply means they found what they required. Also consider some individuals may experience social anxiety even in a virtual setting, where interactions many never think twice about may be problematic.
Another factor is writing. If I were actively writing I wouldn't be checking this site because, to be honest, I'd be immersed in and focused on whatever reality I was writing about. I would imagine other writers do something similar. When there's a lot to be done in this world, the writing waits.
When it comes to retirement, it means different things to different people. Some see it as a time to travel and see the sights they missed when career was paramount, others see it as a time to relax and enjoy the time. I have just as much to do on a daily basis as I did before I "retired", the difference being I now have retirement pay making life a bit less precarious. If Mr Anderson decides to do other things, it's understandable.
Now back to my kaffee before the crew wake up and start demanding time, attention, and service. Once they engage a target the day flies quickly.
