The expression is not mine. I came across it in Laurence WATTS's foreword dated August 2017 to Quentin CRISP's The Last Word / An Autobiography (2017).
Quentin CRISP (1908-1999) was an English wit - and a transgender gravely discriminated in his country until the middle of his life. He became famous after a film was made from his autobiography The Naked Civil Servant. By the end of his life he lost the use of his left hand, and could no longer use a typewriter. His editor, Phillip WARD, asked him to speak in the microphone of a tape-recorder for his last book, thus made during the final year of his life.
18 years elapsed between Quentin CRISP's death and the publication of his last book. Writes WATTS: "so much time having passed since Quentin's death, there is the very real question of just how many people now remember who Quentin was. It is with this in mind, not to mention the generational collapse in reading that we are currently witnessing, that I have sought to provide as much detail on Quentin's life, observations and quotes in the form of footnotes."
As regards my own books, I am convinced my sitcom Spiffies and Loonies will never be read by the public because in their mind a sitcom is only meant to be watched performed on television.

Publish all your books as paperbacks, and hardcover. My hardcover is less expensive than my paperback. Different POD.

After seeing today's heavy use/dependence on emoticons in electronic communications, I often wonder if written language is slowly evolving into hieroglyphics not unlike the writings of the ancient Egyptians - the alphabet replaced by the pictograph.
I hope the emoticon is simply a fad. It certainly is a convenient shortcut to replace a more civil writing style.

not to mention the generational collapse in reading that we are currently witnessing, I see both:
- on the one hand, people who don't even shadow anymore, but only voice mail. No more paperbacks on public transport - but smartphones are sometimes e-readers.
- On the other hand, incredible and successful engagements for reading. For example, the successful US youth book series The 3 investigators is (at least in German) now also available as The 3 investigators Kids for grade 3 and 4 - and even The 3 investigators Kids Grade 2 for grade 2: dreifragezeichen.de/ My son got two volumes for Christmas. Both have already been devoured.
And the internet services where children collect points when they answer questions about books they have read. - www.lepion.de (free version with less books, you may ad questions for your own book)

Yes, Ingram Spark hardcover is less expensive than the paperback elsewhere. Plus they distribute to Amazon.ca and everywhere else in the world.

I must agree that the current generation is much less literate, and that there are fewer things in common between generations. I have a coworker named America (A fairly common name for daughters of immigrants) and sometimes I will answer the phone, "Good Morning, America, how are you?" -- my coworkers nearby will laugh if they re over 50, and will wonder why people are laughing if they're under 40. The popular song, _City of New Orleans_ , seems to have fallen out of the common knowledge.

Not the original from Steve Goodman (1971), but the top 18 version by Arlo Guthrie in 1972.

Lovely. I'd never heard it.

I remember the Guthrie version quite well, as I heard it on the radio a lot.

I was playing it on the guitar just last night. It was one of my repertoire in the barracks back in the Service days.
Don't you know me? I'm your native son.

Often you see Book Sales Down! But it's not the case. Especially during Lockdown (at least in the UK) where people found themselves at home all the time, with, well, time on their hands. Sales increased. Anyway, take a look at this >> www.markinblog.com/book-sales-statistics/It only seems to include the USA. I am currently 68, and through that so far life, I know that the majority of people never even read the back of a cornflakes packet on the table before them. Some people even think one to be a bit weird for reading things. I don't think that's changed.
