I'm comparing book distributors, and KDP is still at the bottom. Has anyone cracked the code? What does it take to sell there?

So, do you mean that you sell through KDP and Lulu and sales through KDP are lower? On the other hand, I have heard that royalties per book are much higher with KDP. Can you confirm this? I was thinking of trying out KDP for my next book - it should be publsihed very soon.

Currently I use Lulu for printed books and ePubs. The ISBNs you can apply there spread your wares across the internet, including Amazon. But on seeing how the ePubs are converted to MOBI (Amazons e-book file) I did not like it, so I now stop Lulu's Distribution of e-books to Amazon, and use KDP for them instead. KDP have some interesting statistic tools, pricing, for example, which shows what is the most popular price there. (Around $3.99 the last time I looked! including for printed books!) I think you can apply ISBNs at Amazon for a cost, but Amazon is vast, worldwide, so I never bother. Amazon also do not insist you buy a copy of your printed book to get the ball rolling. (But it's best to buy and view one anyway. The proof is in the Proof.) KDP also print and dispatch the books, cutting out at least one middleman. Lulu do not. But as I say, Amazon books is massive, worldwide, so there's a lot of competition as well as potential buyers. And you are in competition with other writers (unless you are very famous!) But don't expect sales unless you massively market the book/s (which I don't). The saying - Build a better mousetrap and people will beat a path do your door, is nonsense they have to be told it's available.

Amazon? It's their e-book type, exclusive. Lulu? they never did. What they did do (or Amazon did it) was convert Lulu's ePubs in to mobis so Lulu e-books could be placed on Amazon. Do they no longer do that? The conversion was a mess, so no great loss.
