I was horrified when I read about The Emergency of 1975 in A Fine Balance, where people were sterilized by force because the government decided it. Alas, it was not fiction. It was so painful to read that it took me ten years to look it up, and lo and behold, it happened. It really happened. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emergency_(India)

Apparently Indira Gandhi was pressed by Western democracies to start a crash sterilization program to control India's population.

I remember reading about sterilization of Indian males by the end of last century. They had to be volunteers. Nobody was forced to have his semen "pipes" tied up. The operation was quick and painless. The reward small. I don't find this upsetting.

Eugenics programs [often enough involuntary on the part of those sterilized] have happened in many countries, some of those programs in action as recently as the 2000s. One example is Canada didn't repeal its eugenics laws until the 1970s. The way it's done now is by sterilizing women, often of indigenous ancestry or members a minority group, with the reason usually given 'it's for their own good'. lawblogs.uc.edu/ihrlr/2021/05/28/not-just-ice-forced-sterilization-in-the-united-states/

The blood rose to my head reading it but knowledge is a good thing. I doubt that anything of the sort is ever voluntary. You can starve people and hang a porkchop in front of them, or you can take away all their rights... You get the idea. Beware of those who know what's good for you.
