Hello Lulu Folks, I am writing on behalf of a client (illustrated her books). I illustrated one book with no problems when it came to the print version, but this one has a very small white edge at the bottom of the page. Specs: Print Book: US Letter (8.5 x 11 in / 216 x 279 mm), Standard Color, 60# White, Hardcover, Glossy Cover I would like to create a new pdf and fix it for the client. The client said the pages looked slightly washed out as well (while was happy with the other book). Not sure if I maybe saved it the wrong way or something? Anyhow, thank you so much for any help! You might measure the height of the page.
If the page is over 11", it's an issue with trim variation.
If the page is slightly less than 11" [again a trim variation] and showing the white edge, then adjust the illustration.
Print trim sizes do vary, especially with POD.

Books with images that reach the end of the page need to be Full Bleed. Make your source document 8.75 by 11.25 and your PDF 8.75 by 11.25. Make your images reach the edge of the page with this new size. This is the answer. Don't allow yourself to be confused or distracted.

Regarding the washed out, print your PDF in the PDFx1a setting. It will be in CMYK and Acrobat Pro (download a trial version) will fix All issues. What you see in this final PDF is what you will get in print. Good luck. *This answer is not absolute, but there is a 90% chance it will fix your color issue.

What Maggie said. ^^^^^
Be sure to save your PDF with the same dimensions as your paper size. That will ensure any remaining tiny white edge is trimmed off.

What are Lulu's Cover Wizards like now? I have not used Lulu for a long time. Anyway. What I used to do was use the eyedropper to grab the colour of the extremes of the full cover images I used and used that colour to totally colour the background, before I placed the image. That way there is no whiteness to become visible when printed. As to what the original image looks like. I always ensure my monitor is set to exactly how an image should print out on my home printer. What I mean by that is WYS on your monitor may not be WYG when printed. Adjust the brightness and contrast etc. Test print. Keep doing that until you are happy with what you create.
