I am trying to self-published a book for global distribution - A4 landscape but get an error that "size is not recognized".
LuLu feedback/hack: Print-on-demand printers tend to print landscape pages sideways, so even if you are creating a wide format book (11.69 x 8.27), the uploaded source document page orientation must be set to Portrait, with page dimensions defined with the width wider than the height. How do I create/modify PDF (or InDesign file) to be PORTRAIT with LANDSCAPE dimensions? Example: Portrait 11.69 x 8.27 (simply rotating page doesn't work) Thank you!

In the US page size is generally width first and height second for portrait: 6x9, 8x10, 8.5x11, 8.5x14, and so on.
A4 Portrait is typically 8.27" x 11.69" while A4 Landscape is typically 11.69" x 8./27". Per the instruction from Lulu Press, can you set up a Custom Page Size 'Portrait' of 11.69" x 8.27"?
If not, contact Lulu Press for more details.

Interesting. A4 is an Imperial size and should be the same size Landscape or Portrait. Indeed Portrait is 210mm w x 297mm h. But of course Landscape will be 297mm w x 210mm h. But still the same ratio.
Normally when creating or modifying a page you can simply change page size/orientation using the tool provided. Most Apps have that option and does more than just rotating. But no doubt you will also have to adjust all the formatting if it does not automatically do it for you.
May I ask why landscape?

Thanks for your replies!
Cameron: I have tried creating a custom page (portrait w/11.69" x 8.27") but it defaults back to landscape orientation.
Kevin: My artwork and book design is horizontal. InDesign allowed me to rotate pages in my existing doc and keep the dimensions landscape/horizontal...but when I made a PDF for upload it still shows as horizontal.

You might want to contact Lulu Press, as I just looked at offered page sizes and A4 Landscape is clearly listed. Something seems a bit off about the Lulu Press feedback / hack.
If you enter a help ticket, reply to the email you get in response, otherwise Lulu Press considers it case closed.

That is an odd reply from Lulu. I recently printed a hard cover photo book from Lulu, 8.5 x 11 landscape without any difficulties. I just did the usual page setup in LibreOffice, US Letter, Landscape, then printed off in PDF and Lulu accepted it just fine. It's a strange reply to say the source document requires printing in portrait. I obviously didn't do that for mine. Update: Okay I figured out why this worked for me... I didn't care about full bleed. Because it was just an 8 x 11 landscape and I accepted the warning that full bleed wasn't going to be applied (the pages are white anyway), it wasn't an issue for me. But, to initiate full bleed, you need to make the page size 1/8" larger on all sides and then portrait vs landscape becomes a problem. You need to keep the orientation portrait, but give the page size of 11.13" width by 8.63" height. LibreOffice will not let me set a portrait size of that, as it automatically switches to landscape as soon as I do. Perhaps you're having the same problem with your application. I had to switch to a desktop publisher that wasn't as "smart' to allow me to do those settings.

Lulu's reply does not make sense. If the A4 landscape is available to create as a book then that is what the printers should create. It's not as if they use domestic A4 printers. It's not unusal for Lulu's Wizards to glitch. I have seen it pop up cannot process warnings, but it processes anyway.
