I came across a site, American I believe. Thriftbooks, or something. My books can be bought there. I was intrigued that they stated they had 50 of each available. One would assume in stock, but I have never heard of this site and as far as I know they have never bought one of my books. I questioned them about the 50 and they stated they deal with Ingram and the publisher. "But I am the publisher!" thinks I, and they have never dealt with me. I have to assume they mean Lulu because I use their free ISBNs, but they don't 'deal' with them either, it's all done via software. Someone buys a book and it sets the ball rolling at Lulu does it not? But what do they mean by "deal with Ingrams"? Lulu buy batches of ISBNs from Ingrams, I do know that. And I expect when used it tags one to each of my books. Annoyingly Lulu is tagged as the publisher. I expect Ingrams then add my books to some database list as available to buy, from Lulu, by anyone. Anyway, it's a puzzle. I asked thriftbooks what is the meaning of "50 available" then, if not stock?" They said that is the max number they can order from Ingrams of each of my books. Huh? There's no limit to a POD book.
All I can think of is that the Help staff at Thrift have no idea what they are talking about.

Sounds like slight of hand marketing hi-jinks to me. Just out of curiosity, is Thriftbooks selling your books at a markup over your Lulu selling price?

I have no idea, I have not looked at my Lulu spotlight for ages, nor adjusted my prices. But the prices at thrift are much higher than at Amazon, which is high to start with, being POD. Seems Thrift have no idea what thrift means. What lately puzzles me is Lulu saying they buy ISBNs from Ingrams. Who are English as far as I know, but Lulu are American. However, Ingrams are not listed as an ISBN agency. At least not in the UK. These come up: The Nielsen ISBN Agency. In the USA it's Bowker. Ingram are this >>> www.ingramcontent.com/retailers/independent-bookstores/ordering and this >>> www.ingramspark.com/ a Self-Publishing company ... Plus this >>> www.ingramcontent.com/publishers/print-on-demand strange that Lulu deals with them!

Kevin, question for you. When you get an ISBN number from Lulu you say they're free? I'm assuming Lulu has bulk ordered a bunch of ISBN numbers to use. I know in Canada we get ISBN numbers directly from ISBN Canada and they're free. But I thought in the US, one had to pay to get a ISBN number? Or am I missing something here?

Yes. In the US ISBN's are a money maker for someone. They are cheaper in bulk. there is a thread here somewhere that lists the prices. I can't put my finger on it now but I believe a set of 5 ISBN's will set you back about $100.

That sounds remarkably high, considering Lulu's are free. I have just looked at a site that says they are £80 each! Another that says they cost between $125 and $2,500! each! But there's this >> www.nielsenisbnstore.com/Home/Isbn As you can see, if a 1,000 are bought in a lump, they are less than £1 each. Cheap enough for Lulu to add £1 to the Cost of creating a book for a 'free' one.

Well if that's the case, I'm glad we don't have to pay for them in Canada.
