Another part... Since many editors / copy editors had to go freelance when publishing houses started feeling economic strains and cutting staff, the new freelancers often started trying to charge independent authors a big publisher rate in order to make ends meets. Experienced editors often charge $25+ an hour.
I was once quoted a flat $4,000 for a read-through, with copy editing costing extra and the stipulation I couldn't push back on anything because she used to work for a large publisher in New York. I decided I was better off not spending money I don't have.

Spelling is normally OK. It's obviously missing words I mean, and where a word or even more have been replaced during writing or whatever, but they a have forgotten to remove the original word/s! "Jenny fell tumbled down the well hole." That sort of stuff, thing, words.

"He peddled his bicycle though the village during his journey" where it should have been pedaled rather than peddled.
"How will the legislation effect the economy" where affect should have been used instead of effect.
I've also noticed remnants of previous edits similar to what you stated.

like doubled up words not being spotted. I suspect in British English the meaning of peddle is to sell something, while pedal would refer to propelling the bicycle. Similar to there, their, and they're appearing in the wrong context. |

What can often confuse the matter of words is American spelling V English, and people can get to the state where they are no longer sure which to use.
American can be strange verbally also. They don't seem to realise that a letter has a sound as well as a name, and they actually pronounce the name of the letter when saying a word.

Oddly enough, many [though not all] people in the US are aware letters have names as well as distinctive sounds.
Yes, there are people in the US who are ignorant or under-educated, but the same holds true of England and most countries.

You've piqued my curiosity since I have no idea which woodworking tool might be used to mention a direction on a map. I still have a few such tools. Regarding people on TV, some might have dropped out of high school, while others have a PhD, though I've known some PhD holders who were clueless outside their specialty others weren't.
Please enlighten me, since feeble-minded as I am [like everyone living in the US], I would appreciate the experience.
To be honest, it makes me cringe when someone from England starts telling local law enforcement how local laws in the US don't apply to them because they're British. But to each their own.

I will spell the two phonetically. Root, as in directions to follow. Rowter, as a type of plane for cutting grooves in wood, to rowt. Americans say rowt instead of root for directions.

Well, few brits know the laws of the road even in the UK, so that does not surprise me. But the cops in the UK seem to turn a blind eye to it. |

I doubt publishing houses do that. Time is money. Maybe that's why they don't seem to check them enough.
