I was amazed when The Rasen Mail put my poem in the paper, here it is!

Well done. Nice and lighthearted in tone.
I must admit I had to look up where Market Rasen is, although I have visited Lincoln before, that side of the country doesn't seem to get much attention on the national news.

Whenever I mention Market Rasen people say "Oh yes that's where the racecourse is located." Apparently Market Rasen Racecourse is very well known. I've never been. If I did I'd probably feel really sorry for those poor horses.

Kind of like Darlington, SC, where the local NASCAR track has been nicknamed "The Lady in Black" and alternately "The Track Too Tough to Tame" by fans. Normally a sleepy little town with nothing special going on, though on a race weekend the place is obnoxiously full of people who gathered to watch cars go around an oval track at high speed.

I thought it was nice the paper local to Market Rasen had an editor with enough sense to recognize the quality and merit of the poem.
Very well done indeed.

Except for us Sphinx-Caneron on a race weekend the place is obnoxiously full of people who gathered to watch HORSES go around an oval track at high speed.

We do have a High Street with shops, but some are closing now. We got a tatoo parlour a year ago. It lasted about 4 weeks. They are very conservative in our market town. All around us we have beautiful countryside. A sleepy place that suits my husband and me.

The closest small town [13.4 miles to the south] has a population slightly over twice that of Market Rasen, and there are enough conservative people there as well.
There aren't that many shops other than farm supplies and such, as most people drive to either San Antonio, Uvalde, or Kerrville to get more than the basics, and there's online shopping as well these days.
I prefer seeing the town's lights on the horizon at night as opposed to being any closer. Unless I'm going to town, the view from the porch is about as close as I get to people these days.

Lucky you!
Our village is almost three times the size of your town. If we don't find something here, most people take the train in one direction: towards the big city. I take the train in the other direction, a smaller town. The distances are short, it's less crowded, I get my business done faster. And now that almost everyone has closed, I get the business people out of the village. Of course the shop is closed. But I can call. And then go and get the goods in the "pick up box" in front of the shop or they deliver it to my home. For them it's a matter of survival - but which branch shop offers that? What never ceases to amaze me in the UK is the many local newspapers. Here, they have merged everything in recent years. The old titles stayed, but the content is 90% the same. In the local section there is usually well over half of the stuff from other regions. And when you send something in (you, but also associations, sport clubs or authorities), they usually don't have room?! (Copy Paste shouldn't be that difficult). But the old 'Newspaper for Town and Countryside Ltd' is now called 'TX Group'. or ?

Yes Benziger, there are very many local newspapers and many are like my small market town's local--The Market Rasen Mail. We are a small town yet we have our own newspaper which also caters for all the small towns and villages around. Our local papers tend not to have political associations unlike our National newspaper that are undoubtedly political.

I do remember something about a racecourse but I remember I chose the pub just nextdoor - if my memory serves me well. My local is Stamford Mercury. ;-)

We have so many pubs in Market Rasen. In fact a song written for Elton John by Bernie Taupin was about a pub.The lads would go to the Aston Arms then get into a fight. His song was called "Saturday night's alright for fighting". Bernie went to Market Rasen's De Aston School. He wrote many songs with Elton.
