J.K.Rowling could so easily have become a self-published author. She may even have used Lulu. Her book was rejected by many publishers. However she got a lucky break. The publisher had rejected her, but his secretary managed to persuade him to publish the book. Anyway she is now famous. Her Harry Potter books are distributed throughout the world and her book managed to get children reading again. However I was puzzled when I read something on google which said that her previous fans wanted her books banned or burned. Daniel Ratcliffe, who played Harry in the movies, is also now in opposition to Rowling. So I decided to find out why. Apparently Rowling has tweeted that "being a survivor of abuse and having concerns around single-sex spaces, www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53002557she felt strongly that a person with a penis should not be allowed in these female only spaces. There was an outcry from the transgender community about Rowling's tweets. This is because many tran women still have a penis. I have never been sexually abused but I can certainly understand her concerns, especially when I read about a transgender woman in a female prison who raped another woman prisoner. I am an old woman and I remember when, as a young woman on a university course, we were told about a transgender woman on campus. She had not had the operation. I felt very uncomfortable when she followed me into the ladies toilets. Martina Navratalova is also concerned about transwomen with a penis participating in woman's sport. I can see her point of view also. I don't think either of these women are transphobic they are simply voicing genuine concerns. I wonder if I will be called transphobic for what I have written!!!

I was reading about her most recent controversy. She was drawing attention to the lack of the use the word "women" in an article. They were saying "people menstruate," and she said, wait, wait, what is that word? Wimben, wombun. She was frustrated by the fact that one cannot say "women menstruate." Because it implies that trans women are not women because they do not menstruate.

I can see her point of view also. I don't think either of these women are transphobic they are simply voicing genuine concerns. I wonder if I will be called transphobic for what I have written!!! Do I think you're transphobic? No, I don't. Unless I'm mistaken, you were raised during a time where it was normal to think of gender [physical or mental, and they are two different matters] as a binary, male or female. At that time any mismatch would have been considered an aberration, and many people still consider it so. It's also basic human nature to be wary or put off by those considered different.
I'll point out now I'm not a medical doctor, but I've read some medical and psychological literature once or twice. If you need a professional's opinion, feel free to seek it out.
The problem is gender isn't a neat simple binary the way people are often taught to believe, as evidenced by the birth of intersex individuals. There are children born with ambiguous genitalia, or a mix of sexual organs both male and female, at times a full complement of both. Medical science doesn't know all the reasons behind why it happens, but one explanation is sometimes hormones that are released during fetal development are released at the wrong times and /or in the wrong order. Another explanation is sometimes an individual's body doesn't react to testosterone or estrogen, meaning a nominally XY child with the condition will develop as an apparent female [albeit with undescended testicles instead of ovaries] or an XX with the condition will develop as an apparent male.
The way mental gender develops during fetal development is still being researched, but it appears the mismatch between mental gender and physical gender starts in the womb as well. For years individuals who experienced the mismatch were considered mentally ill [similarly to how homosexuals were considered mentally ill and deserving of punishment]. That attitude is slowly changing among mental health professionals, though not all. When children whose mental gender doesn't match their physical appearance are growing up, if they're open about what they're feeling it isn't unusual for some of their contemporaries to react violently, and sad to say some parents have tried to "beat that nonsense out" of the child.
When it comes to a trans individual either actively seeking to transition or at the least alter their physical appearance via medication so the physical body is more in line with the mental gender, it's important to bear in mind the effects of the hormones used. A physically female individual taking testosterone will start to build up muscle mass while a physically male individual taking estrogen will begin losing muscle mass. Sexual dysfunction is also a usual side effect of that type hormone therapy.
Now when it comes to single-sex spaces and feeling safe, while I can understand Rowling's concern perhaps she needs to think about the trans female's concerns as well. Trans females get physically assaulted and at times murdered for being who they are.
My question is, shouldn't everyone have an expectation of being safe while being who they are?

Thanks for that Sphinx Cameron. I am 83 years old and over 60 years ago i knew nothing about transgender people. I remember, for all my friends and me, on campus was the first time we had seen a transwoman.
So are you saying that even if they don't have the op to remove the penis, because of the estrogen they are given, transwomen cannot perform like men? Also do they lose strength? How was someone raped in prison by a trans female? It's so confusing. We have a transwoman here in my town. When I used to run my charity stall for the Salvation Army, she would come and chat to me and I enjoyed talking to her, she was very friendly. I only knew she was a transgender woman I didn't know if she had the operation or not. Would I have felt uncomfortable using the female toilets with her. As I knew her from our frequent conversations and liked her, I probably wouldn't have minded. Strangely she told me a very sad story about her partner, another transwoman. Apparently this partner had found another woman and left her. This really hurt her, she was very unhappy. I think she found comfort talking to me, as every Saturday when I had my stall she would visit me and chat. I would have been very sad if she had been beaten up.

I am so sorry to hear that Trans females get physically assaulted and certainly they should have the expectation of being safe but I think of scared people like J.K.Rowling and others like her and I can''t think how both could feel safe in certain places.

Interesting essay, and makes for a better understanding. The Twitterverse experience she describes is part of why I don't do a lot of social media. Too many people deal in the binary of others totally agreeing or totally disagreeing and a desire to dominate until others are compliant. Living in the U.S. I'll reiterate: "My question is, shouldn't everyone have an expectation of being safe while being who they are?" This goes for Rowling and everyone else and it concerns the bathroom or water closet. I get her concern based on the certificate mentioned, but I also want to point out that in this country people tend to have some messed up ideas regarding who goes into which bathroom and for what reasons so I'm afraid I'm not so sympathetic on that point. I'm an older male, and having young children tends to have me facing scrutiny from people who haven't seen me before who are "woke" to issues like child abuse or human trafficking. The reason behind the scrutiny is based on the biased assumption that males my age are beyond their child rearing years so the only reason an older male could have for leading a young child into a restroom, especially a female, is amoral. While some buildings [commercial or governmental] have unisex "family" facilities, a lot of them don't even though more should. As a parent if one of my children goes somewhere with me, I have a responsibility to take my child to the bathroom when they need to go potty because when my spouse isn't with us she obviously can't take the child in to relieve herself. It doesn't help matters when the "family" facility is locked or nonexistent, because I can't take her in the women's restroom leaving the option of my daughter urinating on the floor or me taking her into the men's room. A lot of males who don't have small children or who never had to act as toilet attendant for their child in public spaces can tend to get funny in an unfunny way when a father has to take a female child into the men's room to find an open stall. Believe it or not a lot of guys get uncomfortable as well. Fun fact of the day: When people have to go potty they usually have to go potty.

When you walk into a bar you think, I'm thirsty and what a fun crowd. I think of The Accused starring Jodie Foster. I also think that if there is a penis in the bathroom stall next to my daughter I'm standing guard no matter how pretty the woman with it is.

I am so sorry to hear that Trans females get physically assaulted and certainly they should have the expectation of being safe but I think of scared people like J.K.Rowling and others like her and I can''t think how both could feel safe in certain places. Okay, I'll boil the biology aspect down as much as possible. Simply put, the bodies of males and females both testosterone and estrogen though in different quantities. Raising the quantity of estrogen in a male will eventually cause breast tissue to develop while muscle mass decreases and adipose tissue increases as well as causing erectile dysfunction -- falling testosterone levels which happens naturally with aging is why older men often begin to experience difficulties performing in the bedroom. Raising the level of testosterone in a female causes the voice to deepen somewhat as well as the development of more muscle mass and facial hair. Regarding a trans woman raping a woman is prison, it doesn't matter if the person in question had a functional organ or not because women in prison have been known to rape other women in prison.

I also think that if there is a penis in the bathroom stall next to my daughter I'm standing guard no matter how pretty the woman with it is. Even more fun fact: I literally can't beat you up, because I can lightly brush against something, almost immediately bruise and / or have a blood blister well up. I can't chase you or anyone else for long due to diminished lung function, rapid heart rate and elevated blood pressure, that and the reality I live daily where due to old injuries one of my knees can go out with no warning. For daily activities most people don't think twice about I exercise caution. When I walk into a bar I'm looking for the exit because I can't stand crowds, and I don't drink in public because it's a good way to get an expensive traffic ticket and court appearance. I don't care if there's a vagina or a penis in the stall next to my daughter, I'll stand guard for my daughter because there is a small percentage of the population that is vile regardless of physical equipment. I've also watched "The Accused". You will never have the perceptions I have due to the experiences I've had and you should be very thankful for it.

It's kicking off in here ! Do tell. Reminds me of back in the day when some cops used the circular logic that because people with longer hair smoked weed all people with longer hair were smoking weed, meaning if the "druggie" they'd stopped didn't have any on them then it was okay to plant some in order to have a valid arrest, therefore justifying their reasoning.
Since I need to make a run into town to pick up supplies I'll say enjoy the evening.

You obviously never got pulled over by an old-school cop in the Southern U.S., and it shows.
Visit Texas sometime, where guilty until proven innocent is how it works for anyone who isn't wealthy. Do something to get the negative attention of law enforcement then start talking about your rights. See what happens.
