My father passed away June 12th of 2019, and, after seeing a woman in the forums talk about making a book for her late daughter, I decided to make one for my father who had only passed away a few days earlier.
It took me forever to make this book; my sister is an avid collector and there were tons of pictures, besides it being very painful. Anyway, the book was completed and I asked my cousin in Corfu to give me my aunt's (the one who raised me for a few years in toddlerhood) address, and when he did -- there was no address number! I triple confirmed with him, and truly, no number. It is in a small remote village where I walked barefoot and drunk (they did not know back them that wine is not good for a three-year-old).
I waited and waited and thought the book would never arrive. It's holiday season, and there is no number. How would lulu possibly find this place, or how would their postal service?
I just got news that it arrived today! And my aunt cried, and was so happy. So there you have it, lulu.com got my father's memorial book that the three us made to a small remote village in Corfu where drunk kids grow up to be bookmakers and come back to thank the book printer. Thank you.

A lovely story, Maggie! Don't worry, if there is no house number in and address. It depends on the place. Here in Switzerland, house numbers where introduced in the last places only two years ago. Before, in rural areas, you had often a farm name or a house name or a street name or just the name of the village as address. In Appenzell, where people are verry traditionnal, they weren't pleased with this modern stuff (house numbers) and in some places the keeped the farm name and added just "1" behind . Once, I had to send a parcel to a person lived in a secret place and under police restriction. I knew the street name and it was in Zurich, the bigest town in Switzerland (you may laugh, but 350 000 inhabitants is a lot for us). So I called the post office for some advice. I was told: If you write a wrong number, it will not be delivered, but return, but if you write no number, so, we have to find the house - and we have also some information we cannot share with you... It arrived. (The Zurich main post office has even a list with the medieval house names and the corresponding modern address: e.g. To the Black Footbridges = Mill Street 5)

Switzerland sounds amazing, like out of a storybook, yes, in medieval times. I went there for a few days once. It was lovely. The people were lovely. And the Swiss don't fight. I will go back one day, I hope.

Ah, Kerkyra, reminds me of the small town my father grew up outside of. yes, they have street addresses, but the postal workers will deliver without it because everyone knows everyone, to include people who left decades earlier.
I'd also say don't worry so much about the wine. Up until about 100 years ago it was usually safer to drink wine or beer than the water coming out of a well or municipal water supplu, or at least mix in some whiskey to make grog and kill the germs.
There's something to be said for for growing up where people are taking life a bit slower.

Indeed.
I actually find it funny. I tell people that I was drunk and barefoot as a child. It was heavenly though, an entire village of doting, loving women. And my grandfather whose few head hairs we used to comb.
What's the name of the town your father grew up in?

Ohh, what a drag. Similar things have happened to me over the years. Long posts disappearing or computer freezing. Major drag. The replacement pos is always short.

Maggie,
My father grew up in southern Mississippi, walking barefoot behind a mule-drawn plow during the Great Depression.

Behind? I imagine a complete movie based on that one word.

It's not as glamorous as it sounds. texasbeyondhistory.net/osborn/images/muledrawn.htmlIt wasn't until Hurricane Katrina rolled through southern Mississippi that two of my aunts finally moved out of the old homestead house [built circa 1920s in part with material from an older home], as Katrina took the roof off. One of those aunts had to drop out of college with a Master's, as the stock market crash that caused the Great Depression destroyed her dream of getting a Ph.D., which was uncommon for a woman to do back then.

That's a powerful picture, and would make a great cover. Wouldn't it be wonderful to travel through time and learn history that way.
A Ph.D is a challenge for a woman nowadays too. Usually by the time it's almost done, the clock is ticking. Still, easier than back then for sure.

I've lived without electricity and indoor plumbing. It's a hard life if you're in it, and with time travel I'd likely be stuck in a period I traveled to.

The second part sounds funny. The first sounds exotic. Watching the last season of Lost these days. Gosh, what an odd ride. But the survivor basics theme enthralls me.
