There are two types of termites, dry wood and subterranean. The subterranean type lives underground and the colonies can be huge, and yes they can destroy a wooden structure. One way to slow them down is to treat a piece of wood with boric acid and set it upright in your garden.
Thanks SphinxCameron. However we decided to sell our property which was located in a beautiful, quiet hamlet in the Gers region of France. Our neighbour, a farmer who owned the adjoining land, died and his lazy son didn't want to work the farm, so he sold much of it to a company who put up some factory farms. Here they force-fed ducks so they could use their bloated livers for foire gras. It was so very cruel! Apart from the cruelty, the awful smell, the horrible effluent and the noise of the trucks going back and forth to the factories was something my husband and I couldn't put up with. We sold the property at a give-away price and moved to England.
