I finally decided I'd have a go at grappling with the process again to see just how difficult it might be. Chose print book, breezed through the copyright section and then hit 'design' where no options existed for the sizes of books, and everything there, from interior colour, paper type, binding etc just has 'option not available' Is this temporary or is it now impossible to actually start a new project?

Ah, it's okay, I just worked out they cocked it up so you no longer select the book you want and then choose from the sizes available. You actually have to look for the sizes first, in a different section, which effectively means a lot of people who click on 'create' first will think nothing's working and go elsewhere. Bizarre!

It is strange. I liked the previous and logical version. See what's available, if it can have an ISBN or not, look at the many options for paper type and whatnot, pick what you want, enter the Project Wizards. Simple.

Yes Lulu in their attempt to make it better made it worse. Go by old standard KISS. Keep it simple stupid.

I simply do not understand why they changed it. It worked. Is that not all that's needed? Interesting that they got rid of the forum just before they did it ...

Lulu (maybe it was Paul, here?) explained in satisfying detail the reasons why they found it necessary to move their platform to something more manageable and secure with the newer network protocols & platforms the world's technology is implementing. Since their system was a patchwork of older technologies and outsourced elements it had become more and more difficult and expensive to keep all the bits sufficiently wired together. It is happening everywhere as it has since the 1980's.
So, they made the jump. Granted, they flubbed the jump, but it is slowly coming together and at this point it is a moot point anyway. The change is made and there is no going back. Sink or swim.

I assume cost would enter in to it. Windows is also codged together, patched, repatched, many new versions, based around an OS that was not meant to do what it can do now, but it still works. At one time programmers were paid by the line, not how few commands they could write to do the same job. So a lot of stuff even in use today, modified, is based on some incredibly inefficient and huge software.
What amazes me is whoever ported that new Lulu site they had bought (I forget its name) to the Lulu we all 'love', had not heard of a Sandbox. Where sites and other software is developed and tested, before it's released. Lulu claim it was beta-tested. Ermm, who by?

I tried to play with the Beta, but it put me in an inescapable loop on the first go. After that I was surprised that it went live so soon. I guess all of us were.

According to Charlie Farley " There were several folks on the Lulu facebook page who were involved in the beta testing last year, they stated their concerns to Lulu at the time but apparently were ignored. Unfortunately there is no sign of the posts now as Lulu deleted the threads."

One would have thought that the first people to ask to betatest it would be those in the forum. Some who had been using Lulu for 10 years. That's the first time I had not been asked in fact, and I don't recall any other regular forum users saying they had been asked.

Maybe they just wanted we mostly inexperienced types to be the guinea pigs?

Maybe they just wanted we mostly inexperienced types to be the guinea pigs? Possibly. But apparently ignored them.

I sent in a query the other day, got the usual automated response, ignored that and replied, asking specifically when the new cover wizard they have promised would be here? I got a reply within one day, which was encouraging, and was told the new cover creator could be with us by the end of the month, and it will be one where you can design the cover on the site itself, so hopefully exactly like the one we had before, which always worked really well. As for the sizes confusion, and all this unnecessary bleed/trim rubbish I am just going to try a Royal size one with all the same settings I used before and see what happens. If it doesn't work I will try elsewhere with new books I do.

They remind me of many call centres who are told by some other department that's "there's no fault with broadband right now" or "your package is on its way" when in fact it's BS, but the call centre repeat it because that's what they have been told. Oh and Lulu help/advice/guide within the Wizards etc., is often generally not relevant to most people, but that the advice is there serves to confuse. Lulu often also tend to misuse some terms and even terms they do not misuse, the general Self-publisher has no idea what they mean!
