I've spent quite a bit of time trying to fathom the mystery of that bleed, and why it causes such irritation. Rather than go back and forth in the 3 threads in different forums where that issue has been raised, I'll create a new thread.
This is what I have come to understand:
1. there is a 'PDF Creation Guide' to download PRIOR TO uploading your interior PDF file. 2. page 11/12 of the PDF Creation Guide solves the mystery. 3. it is important that the creation guide is read - the 'error note' saying: "Full Bleed ... ... ... upload a PDF prepared for full bleed." will otherwise not be understood in its content. 4. the 'error note' is not an error note - it is a reminder that those PDF that contain images going to the edge need a bleed added - AS INSTRUCTED ON PAGE 11/12 of the guide. Anyone else can IGNORE THAT NOTE.
While I think the 'mysterious bleed' issue has been solved, I also think that this particular aspect of PDF creation needs a less hidden instruction, and not a note that looks like an 'error note' AFTER the PDF has been uploaded.

Thank you for your hard work here, Taz. I think Lulu owes you for your time.

<wink> ... the information is all there, but one has to go and scrape it together from everywhere. The simplest way of preventing all the confusion is to have that 'bleed' note BEFORE ANYONE UPLOADS THE INTERIOR PDF - just like the template download button for the cover creation. That way, the uploading person is alerted to the fact that the thing needs an extra 3mm all around IF FULL EDGE-TO-EDGE pictures are on any page. Anyway - there is now also an extra line (or I hadn't seen it until today) at the bottom of the design page (where one uploads), but before the 'print ready files' download tab, saying ... "For detailed PDF creation instructions using full bleed, see our Full Bleed instructions" with the link going here: help.lulu.com/s/article/How-do-I-make-my-content-stretch?language=enThe simplest way for me to do the 'bleed' thing: My PDF in the Chosen Trim Size Supported by Lulu: 11x8.5inch (27.9cm x 21.6cm) ... print ready file downloaded to see what Lulu's print ready file size is: 28.58cm x 22.23cm). Open the PDF of my original 11.8.5inch PDF - print PDF to the larger size - reupload the new PDF that has now a 'bleed' included - and voila - 'error' note gone. What a Zangengeburt that was ... but now that the adding of the 3mm all around is clear - no probs.

Throw-away thought: Maybe a colour other than white of the automatically added 'bleed' margin could be chosen by the uploader? That feature is used at Redbubble for artists' products where the artwork size does not fill the entire merchandise area ...

FOR YOUR AMUSEMENT: My latest 'ticket' to Lulu: Good morning Further to the bleed issue below - I'm just going through the remedial steps to include my edge-to-edge colour photos in the right dimension by 'enlarging' the PDF to the 'print ready' size as downloaded from the 'design' page in the book's account, to include the bleed. It is 'Birds in Tasmania', ID dpw5r2, size 8.5 x 11 in / 216 x 279 mm. I opened the PDF that I downloaded from the old Lulu account when it was still possible in June - I could see the white margin/bleed that had been added. As I use iMac, I can modify PDF sizes. While the PDF was open in preview, I clicked 'print PDF', and gave it the 'print ready file' size as downloaded from Lulu, that being 222.3 x 285.8mm, and enlarged the contents on the pages by a small % to stretch the images to the outside edge of the bleed margin (to the edge of the paper that would be cut off during trimming). That is fairly straight forward. So now I have a PDF that is as per print ready size given by Lulu - 222.3 x 285.8 mm, no white margins, images going edge to edge, and am uploading it. Now I get the error message: "Book Size: The book size you selected does not match the page size in the file you uploaded.". Yet, I uploaded exactly the measurement as given by Lulu that includes the bleed. Where have I selected a book size? I cannot find the place where I have selected a book size ... The Book Size and Page Count section specifically says: "The Book Size and Page Count are based on the interior file you upload. To change these, please upload a revised PDF interior file." Your PDF instructions list the 8.5 x 11 inch size for 'including bleed' size as 222mm x 286mm (page 12 of the PDF Creation Guide): US Letter (8.5 in x 11 in) including bleed 8.75 in x 11.25 in 222 mm x 286 mm So, I'm uploading a print ready file that includes bleed, 222.3mm x 285.8mm for a supported book trim size of 8.5x11 inch (or 216mmx279mm). Where does it not fit? ______ I'm sure there's going to be a perfectly logical explanation for this - I'm currently uploading the 5th trial PDF (each one 'manhandled' a little differently). Somersaults anyone?
Ha! Haha! 5th time lucky! - NO ERROR CODES OF ANY KIND - my PDF sumersaults finally payed off - maybe there was a hickups somewhere between #1 and #5 that is beyond human comprehension ...

:-) I'm not in a situation where this debacle is costing me income - I'm retired, and no longer interested in a career. So I am indeed having fun. But if I can help others by having fun, I don't mind a little dabbling.
