Can someone please make my penny drop ... I am trying to put something in words under the avatar, but only manage to go back and forth from the uploaded avatar to a default avatar. (Sigh ... getting too old). (Edit: When I click on 'edit avatar', all I get is a black window).

Lady Elizabeth, I understand having as few rules as possible. I also understand there is a minority of the population who will act inappropriately. I don't lock my door or my car because I distrust everyone, I do it because I know there are a few members of society who will eff things up for every one else because they want what they want.
That is a sad fact Cameron. I am one who tends to see the "half-full glass" rather than "the half-empty glass." However I too lock my car door because of the minority of crooked people who want to steal it. Using that analogy for this forum, I guess we need more policemen/women to patrol our site. If we lock it up like our car doors, we just won't get any new members. So rather than exclude good people, increase the police presence. (As admin has done with more moderators) They will delete any scammers and protect us. If benziger also chooses to select another admin we will have further protection.

New members know, why their first post are delayed. You may have a look to the post scriptum. You will certainly notice the positive wording:

Hi admin, That looks perfectly reasonable to me.

Benziger indicated new members are informed their first few posts will be approved and why, which isn't a great inconvenience.
Increasing "police presence" isn't really helpful when it comes to trust and situations calling for expertise other than warding.

As I mentioned before Cameron, our moderators are experts and very well informed. I certainly trust them to keep us safe as I do Admin. I was using the term "police" as a group of people who would check on our site and stop scammers posting. So far they have been extremely successful. New people are given the warning that their first post will be quarantined because of scammers and I hope they are not put off by that notice. So far we haven't quite reached 100 members but we're close.

So far we haven't quite reached 100 members but we're close. I've been considered a subject matter expert in the past, and I do try to keep up with a variety of different subjects as possible [which is hard to do with our young children talking some days]. Being a moderator for me is likely not because of what I do or don't know, but rather because I try not to be a jackass.
When it comes to new members having their first few posts approved, they need to think of it like someone who has just opened their first bank account or gotten their first non-adult driver's license. New bank accounts typically use low numbers on checks which lets merchants know it's a fairly new account, while new drivers who are under the age of legal majority [at least here in Texas] have a provisional license. It's not meant as an insult, but it does indicate an adult level of personal responsibility is required.
Like you I hope new members are not put off by having a few posts approved, but if someone new is put off perhaps they need to consider how they'd feel if spammers were trying to post on a site the new member had set up.
Now I need to go get ready to wash dishes, as tomorrow is laundry since clean socks are nice.
