I hadn't realised that Lulu no longer offered their own paid service. I saw Paul's blog, "Lulu has always been and continues to offer free, DIY publishing and revisions. Nothing about what our site provides has changed. We’ve just decided not to offer paid services any longer, in favor of a marketplace for other professionals to offer those services." That does not surprise me at all. What they offer themselves is old-world money-making: They work and get money for it. That is exhausting and the profit is small.
Now Lulu changes to the new-world-money earning: They have a commission on the work of others. Commission on our books or commission on our help - it's the same. This is done without effort, without sweat and dirty hands. And that can be multiplied and accordingly the profit multiplies. Air b'n'b or Uber or .... show you how: Others work hard, they collect. Another advantage is the simplification within the company: you only need marketing, secretariat, accounting and management - although: the first three can be outsourced, like the IT services. That is a real lean company. As in the theory book. I think I will send them an offer to collect dividends. They could even outsource that ;-)

Perhaps the change was inevitable. I remember when I first told my friends about Lulu. They asked questions like, "Do they charge for you to self-publish?" "Is it really hard to learn how to self-publish on the site?" "Do they charge to put your book on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc?" "Do they charge for the forum?" "Do they charge you to contact customer service for advice?" "Do they charge a great deal to print your book?" "Do you have to buy lots of books?" They were all surprised when I answered "no" to the questions and several of my friends joined Lulu. However after the change some of them left. sigh!

I always felt that Lulu’s paid for services were somewhat hit and miss. They were also expensive and their timescales couldn’t be relied upon unlike the professional services offered by that Canadian Lady and some others.
