Just print using the setting PDFx1a. They could have just said that, true. Ignore the word Normalized. It means nothing. I have two choices : PDFx1a-2001 or PDFx1a-2003? does it matter? I've been using 2001 for 16 years. Haven't tried 2003

The pdfx1a did not work for me.
I tried fiddling with the options and found that if I select interior color as "color premium" and select 80# coated white then the option for saddle stitch becomes available. Actually this is the only combination that makes it available?!?! which is useless for a coloring book since all pages are black and white.

I compromised and made them all perfect bound. Price is low and you have distribution. Premium colour will give you paper you can't colour on. Don't do it.

What notification did you get?

perfect bound is not well suited for a coloring book... actually spiral is, but that not an option for global, but saddle stitch is,... so why is it only available for premium??? and why isn't there something to tell me this before I start do a lot layout for the book? feels like wasting my time.

To avoid such problems, some people moved away from Lulu. At the moment, I publish with Ingram Spark (there is a coupon until end of year for free publishing instead 49$ upset costs - there was a similar coupon in spring). tasmanianartist had good experiences with mybestseller (.co.uk). If you speak german and do not need your own ISBN, epubli.de may be the best choice.

hmm.. I did write a ticket (actually two, two different subjects). Have not got a reply yet. What is the typical waiting time for a response from Lulu?

Typically there is an auto-response from Lulu Press within minutes of you entering a support ticket. If it's been longer, check your email's spam folder.
If you find the response, odds are you need to reply to it or the ticket is considered closed.

That’s a bit unkind. Good job you didn’t make that comment 15 years ago . I’ve just read through all your comments in this thread and I’m a little confused as to your problems. You first asked about ‘normalizing’ and I believe that was answered by myself and others. Then you asked about paper types, book sizes and bindings. There are a number of well experienced Lulu’ers who I’m sure are more than willing to help you on anything to do with publishing thro Lulu. May I suggest that you take a little time out and compose a new response describing all your current unresolved problems. ( How about that Maggie??)

what kind of answer is that "Help yourself"... what do you think I have been doing: posting, making tickets, trying out different pdf formats, trying out different publish options. It's a very good answer in my opinion seeing that Lulu have not exactly been forthcoming on the help front this past year. If you want help publishing\creating through Lulu then frankly you only have three choices.....Lulu itself, doing it yourself or asking those who've gone through the procedure for themselves and are willing to freely pass on their knowledge and expertise. My particular psyche is biased towards finding things out for myself so I set out to learn about PDFs and whatever I needed to make my experience with Lulu as easy as possible (BTW 'Normalization' refers to a PDF that is totally self-contained i.e. no links in the document to external elements). But that's just me.
DIY especially in learning how software works floats my boat, if it doesn't for you then that's fine, which leaves with you with no other option than to rely on those who have gone before to help you out if you want to progress further. Again, your choice, but a lot has been written on here about how to get over all sorts of problems Lulu throws up - embedding fonts, flattening PDFs, incorrect covers, workflow methods, suitable software to use, the correct settings, how to calculate sizes etc. - so it's worth checking back to see if a question or problem you have has already been covered.......and solved. Or post you questions on here for us to take a stab at answering.
It may be that we can't help you, it may be that what you are trying to achieve just isn't possible with Lulu and no matter how much you say it's confusing or incorrect or just plain stupid there's absolutely nothing we can do about it. So if you want to let off steam on here about how terrible Lulu has become then you'll be in the company of those who'll be on your side. But if you want actual help then tell us exactly what the problem is from stopping you progressing on Lulu and, if we can, people here we will try and help you getting published. Which is why I think Mag2024 's answer was a pretty good one actually and not deserving of the response it got.

You are right. My response sounds hostile but it's not. I mean, don't rely on lulu or on raising tickets. You will get nothing. We can and will help you. Until your work is done. We are professionals and free. So, let's slow down and tackle one thing at a time and get your book published.

That's actually quite beautiful. She's right though. She's suffering and my response came across as flippant.
