I got an .ibooks e-book. Now, of course, I could order a new hard drive (possibly a new battery) and put that in my Titanium PowerBook G4. Then find an old MacOS X somewhere and finally read the .ibooks book. (Just realising that my PowerBook is now of full age.)
But maybe it can be done without a screwdriver, tinker box and overloaded parcel post. - Which e-book readers do you use?
- What are their strengths and weaknesses?
- Which OS do they run on? Can they also read .ibooks?
- Is there an .ibooks reader for Linux (or Windows)?

Apple ibooks were either in epub, PDF or the proprietary format IBA. Try renaming the one you have to .epub or .pdf and see if your software will read that 'as is'.
I've just read that IBA files are really ZIP files, so you could rename it and see if you can unzip it.
The file you have may have DRM applied to it in which case it will be encrypted. You can remove this and convert it to another format (e.g. .mobi for Kindle) but since that's naughty and illegal to do you must cross your heart and promise that you won't search on Google how to do it.
I don't believe there's an ibooks reader for Windows because of the need to decode possible DRM, don't know about Linux.

Thank you, I will try it later today, when the Christmas tree is bought...
Removing DRM is in principle forbidden in Germany, but passing it on to family members, for example, is explicitly permitted, which implies removal in the private sphere. Regarding Switzerland, the legal department of the copyright society ProLitteris says: "It is allowed to bypass the protection mechanism as long as the e-books 'liberated' in this way are only used privately."

Funnily enough one of the primary pieces of software used for converting between many different .epub reader formats is being given away for free today - or at least with a year-long licence. But since this software can also be used to strip the DRM from these files as well I am hesitant in posting a link especially if it is verbotten, both in certain countries and if it's against the rules of this board.

I don't think it's against the rules of the board, since there are countries which allow end-users to remove DRM from files for private personal use only.
As for countries which might frown upon DRM removal period, it's kind of like Age of Consent. In some places it may be as low as 10 while in others there is no Age of Consent outside of marriage, and many stops in between. In essence it's a person should verify what the law is in a particular jurisdiction before acting scenario.

OK, I leave it up to the individual to decide. You have 14 hours from this posting to get it from Here after which the offer ends.

Thank you @bizzley. That's what I call a clever business model: they give away the software. And then, when I have got used to it and appreciate it, in a year's time, yes, I will have to buy a licence. It's like authors who give away the first chapters of their book or the first volume of a whole series. When it gets exciting, I want to read on, no matter what the cost.
Well, as my computer does not have windows, but penguins in, I looked for something similar and I learnt amazing things:[1] Calibre, can do it to. Calibre, the well known open source e-book-reader. There is a plug-in[2] to install and then, it can remove DRM as well.
