Random thoughts. A relatively small numbers of users of this Forum are active. The active ones are only interested in sales. How many of the registered users just create a single publication? What the most popular genres? Many unregistered users just come to read for information or amusement. Not true that the active ones are only interested in sales. Most popular genre is gay romance.

I am happy when the sale of a book brings me some royalties, but I'd continue to write and publish even if none of my books sold, because I am aware that for some titles I am the only one to have studied the subject, and I want the result of my research to remain printed for the few people interested in this generation and all the future ones. I write two sorts of book 1) didactic books mainly on Tagalog linguistics 2) entertainment books (a sitcom, novelized periods of my life, my dreams). When I started, I was sure my didactic books would never sell, and that I'd only make some pocket money with my entertainment books. What happened was the very opposite. My didactic books sell in small quantities, but regularly. Conversely my entertainment books don't sell, or in such paltry numbers that it sounds like a joke.

It's not just sales for me - it is a matter of personal fulfilment and making other people happy (my books have a strong collaborative aspect).
Of course, sales are important - but it's only really a little side-line at the moment.

The best-selling novel genres: bookstr.com/article/book-genres-that-make-the-most-money/1) Romance / Erotica 2) Crime / Mystery 3) Religious / Inspirational 4) Science Fiction / Fantasy 5) Horror I don't write for sales, I write to different characters shut up. If my kids learn something from my work, great. If others enjoy what I do, great. If I earn a few coins in the process and people think about what I wrote, even more great.

If I were primarily interested in selling, then I would have to write about other topics and, secondly, use the time I spend here to finish manuscripts I have started. I agree with potet: I share what I research and write down anyway. And here I met interesting people. If there were no pandemic and no climate change, I would book holidays in Texas, Northern England, Canada, France, etc....

Ah research, fun times, since I had to learn how to calculate orbits and how long they last because I've met people who would want to know.
Now should you visit Texas by flying into San Antonio International Airport, be sure to visit Castroville, a few miles west on US Hwy 90. Founded in 1844 by Henri Castro, the settlers were from Alsace and Baden. Up until 1944 visitors were likely to hear Alsatian spoken. Castroville is the sister of Ensisheim [Alsace], France.

I am active here, Ken.
Why do I publish? I don't know. It was suggested long ago When someone saw me rhyme with speed. So on a whim I did the deed:
I wrote a rhyme, sent to a friend. I added more as an amend. Then as they watched my fingers type The poem grew, to their delight.
The story stretched two hundred sheets. Then thirty more, both hot and sweet. (That's how my Castle's Keeper grew. A soaring song of love, it's true!)
The friend said, "You should publish this. "It makes me swoon and sigh in bliss!" I asked, "You think it's good enough?" The friend exclaimed, "It is great stuff!"
And so I found a Lulu link. I made the book (but didn't think That I would ever sell a bunch. In fact, it never paid for lunch!)
But life was changed! I wrote another: Largest rhyme between two covers. SPACE was born - a massive tome, Which brought my writing habit home.
Smaller books? I'll make a few But big ones are more fun to do. So now I'm writing yet one more For those who don't find rhymes a bore.
Now, have I tried to market these? That's not my skill set, if you please. I just write in rhyme my stories. Try to sell? That's not my worry.
And, from what I tend to see, The hotest genre's poetry!

I've had hundreds of downloads for my free eBooks. (Kevin said that the free down-loaded books don't get read, but hopefully some of them will be browsed.)
PS Lovely poem.
