Hi everyone, thanks for letting me in. I'm looking to reformat a book for Lulu, having decided to move on from Blurb (mostly due to their astronomical postage costs in the UK). The closest Lulu book size is the US Trade 6" x 9". Can I ask, will Lulu need me to submit a file that is 6" x 9" or will it need the file 6.25" x 9.25" ? I presume the latter, it's just I'm not sure whether to set my page size to the smaller size and add the bleed, or whether to set the page size to the larger size and simply allow for the bleed in my formatting. That may seem to splitting hairs a little bit, but I'm not sure whether the final document size that Indesign exports includes the bleed in its overall size (I suppose I ought to just export a file and check) or whether it doesn't and I don't want to format 200+ pages of text one way, if it needs to be the other. And, a supplementary question, Lulu's safety margin appears equal all round the page. Would everyone generally allow a little more for the gutter? Many thanks.

I don't use InDesign but it's standard for all software. 6.25x9.25 your working file and final PDF. Point three gutter.

Thanks Maggie. I've run a test now, and think I know where I am with it...
In Indesign I set my pages to 6" x 9" and then set a bleed area to take the pages up to 6.25" x 9.25" BUT the exported file comes out at 6" x 9" so it doesn't take account of the bleed area. So what I'm going to do is to switch the Indesign bleed off, set my pages at 6.25" x 9.25", and then mentally add the bleed around my 'safe working area.' I think that ought to work...
Cheers!

Select Shrink to Fit if you have that option when you export as PDF. Must be 6.25x9.25. Good luck.

Watson when using InDesign set up bleed at the start of the process. Here’s how to Add a Bleed to your InDesign document It’s best to set up your InDesign document with a bleed before you start working on your document. You can add a bleed later, by going to File > Document Setup, but it can be fiddly as InDesign will only apply your revised settings to the pages you currently have selected. The best place to start is right at the beginning of the process, in the New Document window. When you go to File > New > Document to create a new InDesign document (or select New > Document from the Welcome window), the option to apply a bleed to your document is down at the bottom of the So in your case you set the page size to 6x9 and then .25” bleed. This ensures the correct size PDF especially when using two page spreads. Of course it’s important to get the PDF correct. In the Export Adobe PDF window, under the General options, select [Press Quality] from the Adobe PDF Preset drop down menu in the Export Menu. From the menu on the left-hand side of the window select Marks and Bleeds to open up a new set of options. Under Marks, check All Printer’s Marks. To ensure your carefully prepared bleed is included in the final exported file, check Use Document Bleed Settings under Bleed and Slug.

Remember on the site when Glenn was still there? He had some templates for all the sizes made up and formatted. I still use those that I downloaded. I just delete the text he put on there but the formatted is already set. Or of you can get one from Amazon too. Not sure if that's usable with Indesign. I have it but never used it.
