Anyone know a way to get around this? I just want to use the words as a guide, go into Styles, change the font before all the text is erased. In order to allow editing of the now read-only document, Word removes all my text. This is new.

This is the third time I am responding to your comment. The last two disappeared. Therefore, I'll make it brief.
New Word software, new laptop. Previously editable docs become read-only when I open them using Word. This has not happened to me in 16 years of publishing.
So, I'm at a loss.

It's currently -16.666 C in Montreal [09:35 hrs CT], and going from a warmish climate to really cold causes stress. A couple days from now the lows are supposed to hit -12.22 C in South Central Texas.
Mid-spring might be a better time to contemplate a voyage.

I thought about it today. I need my car and my birth certificate, but my cousin offered to send them to me. Besides that, I'm in love, have two dogs who cry from joy when I pet them, the sun makes the water glisten, and I'm moving into a new dwelling Sunday, ten feet from the sea, so I think I'll be staying. At least for the next little while.😊

I might go back in the spring or summer if my cousin can't manage to ship my gorgeous, beautiful real automatic car that doesn't slide backwards when on a slope when it's in Drive.

Where did you get the version of Word you have installed? I went back to the place where I bought the laptop, paid, and asked them to install Word. They are professionals.

Indeed it is the restricted fonts. There was a notice up top, an orange bar.

Indeed it is the restricted fonts. There was a notice up top, an orange bar. If you open the docs in notepad or word pad you should be able to bypass the restricted fonts to save a plain text copy then reformat. A pain to do but better than dealing with read only access.

We have an auto-transmission that does roll back on a steep slope, and no I don't like manual-transmission on a slope any better. Try driving a 4-cylinder modern pickup truck with manual-transmission through mountains while towing a 74 Jeep DJ-5 from California to Texas, not fun.
Depending on what needs to be done, some tasks are more suited to manual while with others it's the automatic.
Good luck on the car.

Good luck on the car. I think I need to learn to drive a stick-shift. This is one curvy island. Thank you.

It's an extremely complex book with frames and florals and enormous fonts. It took forever to make it work. I now use it as a template. I'll apply the tips you and bizzley provided tomorrow and see what happens.
